Key news and reports: WEEKEND 5/6 DECEMBER 2015

ALL SATURDAY GAMES CANCELLED AS STORM 'DESMOND' HITS THE NORTH - 16s LOSE IN TOP TABLE CLASH - 14s ENJOY GOAL FEST- 16s GIRLS SHARE 8 GOALS

It had been the windiest and wettest November I can ever remember and the first weekend in December saw some of the heaviest rainfall ever recorded. With a 60mph gale blowing across the Fylde Coast accompanied by heavy rain the PDPL quite rightly made a decision at first light on the Saturday morning to cancel its entire league programme. It simply wasn't fit for young children to be exposed to such horrendous conditions.

Storm 'Desmond', as named by the Met Office, hit the north of England hard overnight on Friday and throughout Saturday. Large areas of Cumbria and north Lancashire were swamped by an unprecedented 12 inches of rain in a 24 hours period which wreaked havoc. Tens of thousands of homes were flooded as many rivers burst their banks to send raging torrents of water surging through towns and villages. Many bridges over rivers collapsed or were simply washed away and power stations were also flooded to leave 300,00 people without light or heating for several days which was a devastating start to the month for all affected.

The weather had calmed down on the Sunday but 75% of the scheduled Sunday afternoon local Youth League games had already been washed out. However, with little rainfall that day and with a gusty wind helping pitches to dry out some teams managed to get their games played. At Seafield our 16s Boys had a top-table clash against Foxhall as as predicted it was a very close contest. Foxhall got off to a flier with a goal inside the first 5 mins and although YMCA enjoyed the bulk of possession for the remainder of the match our boys just couldn't find a way through the visitors' resolute and solid rearguard and that early goal proved decisive as Foxhall went home with a slender 1-0 victory. Our 14s were away to BJFF Blues at the Bispham Gala Field which was surprisingly declared fit for play. The pitch was obviously heavy but our boys adapted superbly to run out convincing 11-4 winners, Spencer Baxendale and Adam Brooks both notching pairs. Our 16s Girls were on their travels to Greater Manchester on the Sunday morning to take on Bolton Blues. The home side were struggling at the wrong end of the table like us but the two teams produced a very entertaining contest which ended all square at 4-4. Our goals came from Poppy Bunting, Ellie Doolan, Emily Fellows and Hannah Maskill.
