Committee Members Needed

The Sandy FC Committee are looking for people to take a more active role in the running of the club. Those who are already part of the committee understand that there is much more to running a club other than just turning up and playing on a Saturday and Sunday.

The Committee needs representatives from each of the three teams at the football club who are interested in taking the club forwards to join the committee. If you are interested then please contact your teams manager or Colin Osborne (chairman).

We also need volunteers who may not already be affiliated to the club, so if you are interested in becoming a part of Sandy Football Club in a support role to help your local community then again please contact Colin Osborne.

Together we can take the club forward.

Sandy FC Centenary Celebrations

Sandy Football Club celebrated Christmas and its Centenary year with an event on Saturday 5th December which was held at the upstairs function room at the Roundabout Club.

About 65 past and present players attended and the first hour of the evening was catching up with friends, having a drink and listening to background music from Gary Lewis.  Then it was time for an excellent buffet, followed by a couple of games and a speech from Chairman Colin Osborne.

The raffle raised over £140 mainly due to the generosity of local businesses and individuals who donated all but one of the 13 prizes.  Sandy Football Club would like to thank Sandra’s Hair Stylist, Lauren Jackson Hair Stylist, Budgens, China Express, Karen Presland, Rob Gaylor, Bob & Jacky Garner, Colin Osborne, Barry & Carol Mills and Doug & Dorothy Oakley for their generosity.  Gunns Bakers donated a wonderful cake for the club in the colours of Sandy Albion – special thanks to David & Debbie Gunn.  Len Cox, a life member of the club and Colin Osborne, Club Chairman, cut the cake and a photograph was taken of the occasion.

Sandy Football Club has produced an A3 calendar which features not only the three current teams, but teams going back to when the club started and many of the decades in between.  There is a limited number of calendars left to purchase and if anyone wishes to do so, they can telephone either Colin Osborne on 01767 682032 or Dorothy Oakley on 01767 226230.  The calendars cost £7.50.

Future events being held by Sandy Football Club include a quiz night on 15th January 2010 at the upstairs function room at the Roundabout Club - please ring either Colin or Dorothy on the numbers above for details – and a Car Treasure Hunt in May, followed by the Presentation Evening in June.

Many thanks to all those who support Sandy Football Club, either by playing for the club, being a committee or support member, attending fundraising events or donating raffle prizes.  We are very grateful

A link to the Bedfordshire FA suspensions list has been placed under the links section of each teams website.

This is to allow managers and players to check whether they are currently suspended.

Those individuals that are dismissed during a Sunday League game commence their ban automatically 21 days from the issue of the red card. This is regardless of whether the club or player have recieved any official paperwork. Managers and players need to be aware of this.

If a player is dismissed during a Saturday league game, then the ban does not commence until the paperwork has been recieved.

The inaugural competition turned out to be a big winner with twenty clubs registering to compete.

There were mixed fortunes for the 4 Sandy sides that entered with all but one going out in the group stages. Sandy Sunday B made the best progress by reaching the semi-finals of the competition only to be beaten by the eventual winners of the tournament.

The winners of the competition were Island, a side made up of players from Premier Division side Ickwell and Old Warden, who beat a side from Clearglaze (Bedford Sunday League) 4-0 in the final. The beaten finalists having won a Semi-final penalty shoot-out against Premier division side Dunton FC whilst Island netted a semi final win over a Sandy Sunday side (Bedford Sunday league Premier Divsion Champions).

Car Treasure Hunt

The fundraising committees first ever Car treasure hunt took place on the late May Bank Holiday and the route covered a journey of approximately 27 miles. For our first attempt we decided to start and finish in Sandy. We actually finished at Sandy Football Club, in order to try and make a little money from bar takings.

The winning team covered the route in the correct number of miles and also collected the highest score from the observational cryptic quiz.

In first place was the Barry Mills family who won first prize of £20 and the runners up were Carl Ashton and Co who won an atlas.

It was an encouraging first venture by the fundraising team and it bought about a good deal of friendly banter between the teams at the finish, along with some rivalry for what they all hoped would become an annual event.

A Raffle was also held on the day with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. thereby making a small profit on the day.

If you are interested in taking part in any future fundraising events for Sandy Football Club, then please continue to check this website on a regular basis for news/details of forthcoming events.

Sandy Reserves
2008/09 Season Awards

This years season saw Sandy A finish three places higher in the league than the 2007/08 season.

Clubman of the Year - Anthony Roberts

Anthony has been a loyal servant to the club for many years. He has given 100% commitment every season and this one has been no different. In many ways this was Anthony's most successful season at the club, he made his most appearances for the club (13) he also scored his first goal. The club would like to thank Anthony for all his efforts this season.

Players Player - Dean Hains

New to the club this year, Dean had a very successful season and this was recognised by his teammates. His quick feet and direct running bamboozled many a defender, which allowed him to score and create opportunities all season. Dean could also be considered the joker of the team, this illustrated no better than when he started to wear a selection of masks during his goal celebrations.

Runners Up - Shane Pope, Liam Evans, and  Brad Dennis

3rd Place - Ian Hammett

Managers Player - Dean Hains

Dean scored 13 goals and had 15 assists in his 24 appearances this season, which reflected his superb contribution to the team. Starting the season up front he was then moved to the right of midfield where he began to shine. Manager Daniel Bailey was very pleased with the way that Dean worked all season as well as the excellent balance that he brought to the side.

Young Player of the Year - Matt Couldridge

Matt made the step up from the Sandy Colts this year and for a 16 year old, had a outstanding season in goal. He made several key saves throughout the season that led to valuable points for the team. He made 25 appearances this season and manager Daniel Bailey has been impressed with how quickly Matt has settled into the team.

Top Goalscorer - Ian Hammett

Ian Hammett scored 20 goals in 22 appearances for Sandy this season also contributing 13 assists. Although missing the first 8 weeks of the season due to injury, Ian still managed to reach his preseason target of 20 goals for the team. His goalscoring run before Christmas included scoring in 9 consecutive games.

Sandy 1st Team
2008/09 Season Awards

Following a tough season, Sandy managed to avoid relegation after winning 6 of their last 7 games which saw them finish 12th in Division 1.

Players Player - Darren Wheatley

After a consistent season between the posts, Sandy's shot stopper was recognised by his fellow teammates to have had one of his best seasons for the club. For a majority of the season Darren was a busy man, as Sandy struggled to get results, but he managed to keep them in many of those matches with a string of fine saves.

Managers Player - Andrew Wren

Andrew Wren made the step up to the reserve side from the A team and he fitted in straight from the off. His tenacious defending and wonderful aerial presence made him a regular in the Sandy back line, and the partnership he formed with Phil Beall at the heart of the Sandy defence ensured that opposition strikers always had to work hard. In his 20 appearances he also managed 2 goals.

Young Player of the year - Alex Baker

Alex joined Sandy this season after playing for Sandy Colts. He had a short stint in the A team before moving up into the reserve side. Alex didn't look out of his depth playing at this standard and manager Richard Wheatley felt that he made an outstanding contribution in helping the team avoid relegation.

Top Goalscorer - Chris Cooper

Although goals were hard to come by this season for the reserves, Chris Cooper managed 8 in his 16 appearances. His season was filed with hard work and few opportunities, but those he did have he took well.

Fastest Goal of the season

Kevin Fage returned to Sandy's line up against Kempston on Saturday 28th March 2009 and scored the quickest goal of the season so far, taking just 38 seconds to cap a wonderful team move.

Kevin finished off the move that started straight from kick off and saw Sandy retain possession and create the chance without Kempston even touching the ball. It was a move that brought back memories of the great Dutch side in the 1970's.
