Opening of New Changing Facilities for Sandy FC

Sandy Football Club’s President, Councillor Michael Scott, will officially open the club’s new changing facilities next week.

The opening will take place on Saturday 17 August, 10.30am, Recreation Ground, Bedford Road, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 1EL.

The improvements were only made possible by a £36,174 grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF), the largest funders of non-league football in the country, with additional funding from Sandy Town Council and Central Bedfordshire Council.

The previous changing pavilion was built in the 1950’s and was in poor condition, with no toilet facilities and under regulation size.

The funding has allowed for the refurbishment and extension of the existing facilities with the erection of modesty screens at entrance, the refurbishment of shower areas and the installation of a toilet in each room.

The changes will meet The FA’s step seven criteria and allow Sandy FC to progress to the Bedfordshire County Football League's Premier Division.

The club’s players and committee members had previously embarked on an ambitious fundraising programme to provide the additional funding for the project through sponsored events and activities.

Funded with £6m each year from the Premier League, the FSIF is the country’s largest provider of grants towards projects that help improve the comfort and safety of lower league football grounds in both the professional and amateur game. These improvements range from new football stands and turnstiles to floodlighting and improved provision for disabled supporters.

Club Chairman, Colin Osborne, said: “I’m delighted that the project is nearing completion. Sandy FC was fully supported by the FSIF and without such support the project would not have been possible.”

Peter McCormick, FSIF Chairman, said: “I am delighted to see the new facilities nearly completed and ready for use by Sandy FC.

“FSIF staff work hard to make sure that the funding that is generously provided by the Premier League each year goes as far as possible and benefits as many clubs and supporters as it possibly can.”

Manager Appointment

Sandy FC has appointed Barry Morris as its new first team Manager for the forthcoming season. Barry is a previous player at the Club when Sandy were in the Premier Division and left six years ago when he moved to Dunton Football Club where he became player/manager for their Premier Division side in the Bedfordshire Football League. Last season Barry was at Shefford and Campton FC where he played in their 1st team.

Club Chairman, Colin Osborne, says that "in interview he found Barry to be enthusiastic, a 'breath of fresh air', someone who had done his homework on the Club and the right person for Sandy at this moment in time".

Colin believes the Club is entering an exciting period in its history. Work on the Pavilion refurbishment starts on Monday June 17th with Modplan appointed as the contractors. The contract is due to be completed by 9th August.

In addition the Club will be running for the first time four teams during the coming season. As well as the 1st team in Division One, the Reserves will be playing in Division 4 and will be in the capable hands once again of Tony Gregory, assisted by Barry Mills. Richard Seldon will be running the Club's Under 18's Sunday side playing in the Chiltern Youth League and Ian Rushton, assisted by Mark Geers, will be running an Under 21 side in the Michael R Peters Sunday League. The latter team will be playing at Sunderland Road Recreation Ground.

Training for the new season commences on Monday 1st July at 6.30 pm at Bedford Road Recreation Ground and both existing and new players will be most welcome. It should be noted that during the refurbishment work there will be no showers available and players should come already changed.

Sandy Football Club Presentation Evening

Sandy Football Club held its annual Presentation Evening at Sandy Roundabout Club on Friday May 10th. Following the buffet meal, Club Chairman Colin Osborne welcomed everyone to the Evening and in particular President Michael Scott and his wife Lynda, long-time supporter Betty Ambrose together with other guests, wives, partners and girlfriends.

Colin, together with Team Managers Mark Pallister and Tony Gregory, reflected on the past season which saw the 1st Team finish in 7th place in the Saturday Bedfordshire Football League Division One and the Reserve Team finish in 10th spot in Division 4. Along the way the Club had held three successful social events – a Race Night, Christmas Social and Quiz Night, as well as a charity match to support a senior player who had broken his leg. In addition, a great deal of time and effort had taken place during the year to progress the proposals to improve the facilities at the Bedford Road Pavilion to enable the Club to be eligible for Step 7 football in the future.

Mark presented his awards to the following 1st team players: Manager’s Player – Ryan Burgess; Players’ Player – Phil Beall; Leading Goalscorer – Phil Beall; Most Improved Player – Ryan Gregory; Clubman – Richard Seldon; and Goal of the Season Award went to Olly Banfield. Mark thanked Colin for all his hard work for the Club and the hard work of Dorothy Oakley as Secretary, together with the other Officers and Committee.

Tony presented his awards to the following Reserve team players: Manager’s Player – Chris Gregory; Players’ Player for the second year running – Johnny Stratford; Leading Goalscorer also for the second year running – Johnny Stratford (30 goals); Most Improved Player – Harry Barham; Clubman – Antony Roberts and the Goal of the Season Award went to Pete Rogan. Tony also thanked everyone involved in the running of the Club; he also referred specifically to Johnny Stratford’s 30 goals which was the third highest in the league.

Following the death of Life Member Len Cox, a new award in Len’s memory had been agreed by the Committee and this would be presented annually to someone in the Club whom the Committee believed had contributed greatly to the life of the Club during the preceding 12 months. Vice-Chairman, Barry Mills, introduced the award and it was presented by Betty Ambrose to Club Chairman, Colin Osborne, who said that he was delighted to be the first recipient of the award.

The Evening concluded with some fun fundraising activities and a Disco.
