Match Report

Sandy excelled in a game that could provide a platform for a strong season, and despite the scoreline it was anything but easy for the team from a higher level as Sandy looked like a completely different team to the one that had played Clifton last week.

Manager Ian Hammett decided to change formation and use two holding midifielders to try and afford the back four some protection and for the first 35 minutes Sandy competed with Baldock and at times even looked the better side. Playing some lovely football the home side utilised the three in midfield to play the ball around and with Matt Evans having an assured debut alongside Phil Beall the team looked solid throughout reducing keeper Mark Pallister to little more than a spectator.

Charlie Seward ploughed a lone furrow up front, but he almost gave Sandy the lead on twenty five minute with a audacious long range chip that had the Baldock keeper stranded and he was thankful to see the ball sail just over. Paul Booth on debut also had a good effort that he dragged just wide. Craig Baker then found Ian Hammett's diagonal run with a 40 yard pass, but Hammetts first touch let him down and he could only toe poke the ball goalwards when under pressure.

On 35 minutes Sandy were undone by a poor refereeing decision as Mark Jennings was adjudged to have fouled the Bladock player when he clearly won the ball. However a penalty was given and Connor Pennery converted the penalty. Sandy though didn't let their heads drop and settled well to ensure it was only 1 - 0 at half time.

Sandy were keen to continue their good work in the second half, but in the end the superior fitness of the visitors was to prove Sandy's undoing. Having been solid for most of the game from set pieces, fifteen minutes into the second half Baldock whipped a wicked ball into the box for Micky Stillwell to tap home. Again Sandy worked hard and tried to play their football, but with only one sub it was hard to compete fitness wise. Defending stoically though, Sandy couldn't quite create an opening to find a goal, even though Darren Gipson sliced a long range effort wide.

Two late goals flattered the away side, as 1st teamer Josh Furness scored an excellent individual goal and then Lewis Littlechild capped off the scoring with two minutes left. Dean Hains did have a late effort that he blasted over from a tight angle, but Sandy couldn't breach the Baldock back line.

Sandy however can be pleased with their performance and can look forward to their first competitive game on the weekend with a positive frame of mind and should they play this well then the season could well be a good one.
