Match Report

Sandy’s dismal away record since Christmas returned in this fixture as they were truly woeful for most of the game, failing to establish any sort of rhythm or fluidity throughout the contest and they were made to look a shadow of the team that beat Blunham earlier in the week.

Starting the game with the same line up Sandy hoped to pick up another three points, but the home side dominated the first half and were two nil up at the break. An own goal from Richard Seldon who headed into his own net from a corner gave Bedford SA the lead. They had created precious little before this despite having the lions share of the possession as Sandy constantly gave the ball away.

It could have been different had Ian Hammett converted one of his two early chances. The first came from a Same James long throw, which was flicked on by Sam King finding Hammett at the back post, but his right foot shot was straight at the keeper. He then had a half chance as Charlie Seward played a lovely ball in between the two centre backs. Hammett tried to take the shot early, but the ball went wide.

Other than a long range Sam James effort this was all Sandy had to show for their first half, and Bedford SA scored a second goal not long before half time. A through ball was alleged by the referee to have taken a deflection of Phil Beall and ruled the Bedford SA forward onside, when he was clearly off. The forward played to the whistle though and deftly lobbed Mark Pallister in the Sandy goal.

The second half saw a slightly improved Sandy performance but still they struggled to get to grips in the game. Sam James was subbed at half time due to injury with Shane Pope slotting in at left back and Dave Smith pushing forward. This provided Sandy with a bit more balance and allowed them close down quicker.

They had to wait until 15 minutes left though to get back into the game. Charlie Seward drove a corner in to the back post and Andrew Wren rose unopposed to head home. Sam King then had a shot blocked in the box and Ian Hammett shot wide after beating two defenders.

Sandy increasingly looked like getting back into the game and rescuing an unlikely point but Bedford SA hit back with a hammer blow with 10 minutes left. Sandy again contributed to their downfall by giving the ball away, allowing Beds SA to cross and find the left winger unmarked at the back post to volley home.

This was no more than Bedford SA deserved as they had played the better football throughout and the performance just about summed up Sandy’s tumultuous season.
