Match Report

Sandy endured a disappointing afternoon at Bedford Road as they continued their up and down season. In a game that everyone thought they should win especially after their 7 - 4 win over the same opposition in pre season they came away with nothing as they failed to perform at all for the whole afternoon.

The game was littered with errors by a Sandy side that were far below their best, and Blunham took full advantage.

Blunham started the game well and quickly settled, Sandy seemed to be struggling to get the ball down and make use of the large Bedfor Road pitch. Neither side though made any clear cut chances early on, as poor finishing from the Blunham side failed to test Mark Pallister in the Sandy goal, and Sandy's play in the final third failed to create anything as passes went astray and through balls were overhit. After a clean sheet last week Sandy's defence was bolstered by the return of Andrew Wren, which saw Richard Seldon switch back to right back and with Shane Pope continuing at left back. This defence stood strong for the first twenty minutes as once again Phil Beall managed to get his foot to most through balls and clear the danger.

Sandy were caught out on 25 minutes though, as a throw from the Blunham right found their centre midfielder who had made an untracked run, Sandy players seemed to be routed to the spot as the player took a touch from the quick throw and slotted the ball past a stranded Mark Pallister. This goal was far from what Blunham deserved, but Sandy gifted it to them as they lapsed in concentration.

Still struggling to create any clear chances Sandy battled to get back into the game, and managed to win a succession of corners. These didn't create a clear chance, but Andrew Wren did force Blunhams keeper into a shapr save as he hit an effort from 35 yards which defelected off a Blunham player causing it dip just under the bar. The Blunham keeper was equal to it though as he tipped it over the bar. Other than this Sandy had little to show for their efforts. Ian Hammett did work the keeper shortly before half time as he controlled a diagonal ball from Richard Seldon to hit a volley which forced the keeper into a splendid save. It wouldn't have counted though as the linesman flagged for offside. Half time 0 - 1

Sandy managed to lift themselves for the start of the second half as they played some nice football, but once again their final ball let them down as they failed to carve out any chances of note. Chris Baines made the Blunham keeper work from a 20 yard free kick, but  he was equal to the effort as he tipped it over.

Craig Baker did make some difference as he came on to replace Liam Hogan on the right wing, and he had a speculative cross/shot that sailed just wide with the keeper beaten. Most of Sandy's attacks were coming down the right side as Richard Seldon was finding all sorts of space and pressing forwards to try and take advantage of this. Chris Baines did have a half chance twenty minutes into the half as Craig Baker pulled the ball back from the byline, but Baines shot from 20 yards went wide.

Blunham had a strong penalty claim turned down 30 minutes in when Andrew Wren appeared to take both player and ball in a last ditch challenge but the referee waved play on much to Sandy's relief. Other than this Blunham also failed to create any chances as the Sandy defence held strong and never looked like being breached.

It wasn't to be though as Sandy couldn't find the goal they needed to take a point from the game. It ended with Sandy having failed to find the back of the net for the second game running. Manager Daniel Bailey was understandably disappointed with the performance but stated 'we just need to look to next weeks game now and move on'. Final score 0 - 1.
