Match Report

Sandy returned to winning ways with an emphatic victory against local rivals Blunham Reserves. The win ended a run of four consecutive away defeats for the visitors and ensured that they kept their hopes of a top six finish alive.

Sandy started the game with an intensity that had been lacking in their play for several games and within ten minutes they were in the lead. Daniel Bailey played a ball in behind the Blunham back four and Ian Hammett outpaced the defence to latch onto the pass and slot the ball coolly into the bottom corner.

This was the start that Sandy were looking for, and the pace of Hammett and Sam James on the left was a constant cause for concern for the ageing Blunham defence. Hammett almost made it two shortly after when James swung a cross into the box but he shot over as he was falling.

Blunham did then begin to exert some pressure on Sandy with a succession of long throws, but the returning Andrew Wren who had recovered from his calf strain amazingly quickly (Man Utd were not on TV this evening) was dominant in heading everything away. Sandy coped well with the barrage and the mistakes of the weekend were not evident at all as Mark Pallister had little to do except take goal kicks.

Sandy had to wait until the twenty fifth minute to add to their lead, when a wonderful individual goal from Sam James made it 2 – 0. James picked up the ball thirty five yards out, cut inside two players and shot left footed from twenty yards into the top corner leaving the keeper no chance. James was then to turn provider for Sandy’s third as he swung a free kick in from the left wing to find Mark Jennings at the back post who headed home.

It could have been more for the visitors, but Sam King had a goal ruled out for offside and Dave Smith was the unfortunate victim of a bobble as he looked to square the ball to Hammett for a tap in after he had run 50 yards with the ball. Instead of finding Hammett he spooned the ball almost out of play and Sam James couldn’t recover it. Half time 0 – 3.

Blunham reorganised at half time and looked a more solid outfit in the second half, but once again they caused the visitors few problems. The Sandy defence was in dominant form and although Blunham had a string of corners they were all superbly defended.

Sandy looked to catch the home side on the break with their superior pace, but it was from a corner that they scored their fourth. Phil Beall had recovered from his toe wasting disease to rise like a salmon and powerfully head home a Charlie Seward corner leaving the Blunham keeper no chance.

Sandy were constantly looking dangerous and could of added to their lead. Sam James had a long shot deflected into the keeper’s hands, Daniel Bailey had a shot parried wide and Sam King had a long range effort sail over. The moment of magic in the second half was made by Captain Richard Seldon, who went on a barnstorming run from right back. He beat two players and then curled a left foot shot from twenty five yards out which looked destined for the top corner, but Blunhams keeper made a superb save to deny Seldon a wonder goal.

Sandy’s fifth came minutes from the end, when Craig Baker released Dan Bailey and Bailey’s cross was deflected into his own net by a Blunham defender. Hammett could of made it six when he was released by James, but his attempted lob went wide.

The result was no more than the away side deserved as they found their form again and were better than the home side in every area of the pitch. They will hope to take this form into their remaining two league games starting on Saturday with a trip to Bedford Sports Athletic. Final Score 0 – 5.
