Match Report

Sandy went into the Jess Piggott Memorial Trophy final match knowing that if they won they would regain the trophy for the first time since 2006.

The opening exchanges of the game saw both sides struggling to settle in possession. Blunham’s striker could have had taken his side in the lead but for the referee to have adjudged the striker to have pulled on Richard Seldon’s shirt before taking the ball forward into Sandy’s penalty box. The opening goal of the game was to come from the penalty spot when a Blunham defender was penalised for a handball following a Chris Cooper flick in the box. Andrew Wren confidently stepped up to fire the ball into the bottom left hand corner to take Sandy 1-0 ahead.

Wren was to then find the net again from a Dean Hains free kick which saw Wren head the ball into the net at the back post. Sandy were to then take a 3-0 lead following a Sam James pass into the path of Cooper who lobbed the keeper from 20 yards out.

However, Blunham managed to grab a goal of their own before the break. A well taken shot from the corner of the penalty box beat James Day after some poor pressuring from the Sandy defence. Half time 3-1.

Sandy continued their scoring early in the 2nd half when Craig Baker headed home from a Dan Threadgold cross. Just minutes later Sandy scored their fifth when Cooper fired home from a deflected Baker shot. Within a minute of the restart Sandy scored again, this time Threadgold crossing for Brad Dennis to head home from the 6 yard box.

Sandy were now cruising with a 6-1 lead but Blunham were to come back into the game over the following minutes. Blunham were awarded a penalty after a seemingly perfect yet strong tackle from Joe Stevens in the box. Blunham’s goalkeeper stepped up to fire home. Just minutes later Sandy’s net was rippled again when following some poor defending a Blunham player was able to cut back in the box and fire into the far side of the goal.

With the score now at 6-3 with 20 minutes to go Blunham had made a game of it. However, following a tug in the box from a Blunham defender on Threadgold, man of the match Wren was able to step up and fire home for his hattrick.

Yet the scoring for the day still hadn’t finished when the fourth penalty of the match was awarded to Blunham following a foul that appeared to take place outside of the box. Blunham’s keeper stepped up again to score his second penalty. Full time 7-4.

Manager Daniel Bailey and Sandy’s Chairman Colin Osbourne were delighted that Sandy had brought home this trophy for the first time in 3 years.
