Match Report

Sandy travelled to Caldecote looking to return to winning ways on a gloriously beautiful day. Unfortunately their performance didn't live up to that of the weather and the visitors came away humiliated and embarrassed after a very poor performance that saw their hopes of finishing fourth severely dented.

Forced to make a couple of changes due to key players missing Manager Ian Hammett handed Luke Morgan his first start for the club at right back with the Captain Richard Seldon moving to Left back in the absence of Shane Pope due to a groin injury. Matt Hall was also recalled to the starting line up as regular stopper Mark Pallister was on a Stag weekend. However JJ and Craig Baker were recalled to the starting line up after missing the midweek encounter against Potton Wanderers.

Sandy seemed flat from the start for some reason and they struggled to get into the game, immediately coming under siege from a succession of corners. Each one was whipped in dangerously but Sandy did manage to clear their lines each time. Playing into the wind in the first half the visitors struggled to get out of their own half and cause the home side any problems. Caldecote however used the wind to their advantage very well, and caused the Sandy backline numerous problems during the first half as they misjudged the flight of the ball almost letting in the hosts on several occassions.

Caldecote took the lead in fortunate style when the ball fell to their left back about thirty five yards out. His overhit cross was caught by the wind  and sailed over Matt Hall, hitting the post and into the net. The home side couldn't believe their luck as they had failed to trouble Hall prior to this. Sandy thought that they had drawn level shortly after as Craig Baker released Dan Stafford with a rasping cross field ball. Staf took the ball on and lobbed the keeper, only to have the goal wiped out for a very tight offside call. To compound their misery further a terrible communication error made it two nil shortly after as with the ball running through to Matt Hall, Matt Evans tried to pass it back to him, only to curl it past him and into the net.

This summed up the afternoon for the visitors as they had just never got started and to really rub salt in the wounds the hosts made it 3-0 after an error from Matt Hall, who dropped a long range cross shot at the feet of the incoming striker who poked the ball home. This third goal did seem to spark Sandy into life for a short period and Staf was denied a goal after a fine save from the home goalkeeper who tipped his low effort round the post. Rob Tapley and Mark Jennings attempted long range efforts that both sailed high and wide failing to trouble the keeper and Ian Hammett couldn't find either Craig Baker or Staf in the middle with his cross after being released by Matt Evans.

Sandy were now just looking to get to half time to consolidate and gather themselves but another terrible communication error in the box from a corner this time between JJ and Phil Beall meant that Sandy failed to clear the ball and the Home sides right back poked the ball home to give them a 4-0 lead 20 seconds before the break. This was just the icing on the cake for Caldecote who were enjoying their afternoon against a team that was supposed to be causing them all sorts of problems. Half time 0-4.

Manager Ian Hammett demanded a much improved performance in the second half and his team did finally respond with greater urgency and fight as they tried their hardest to get back into the game and find the goals that would inspire them on. Using the wind to their advantage they pressed Caldecote back into their own half, pressing higher up the pitch and forcing them to give the ball away allowing Sandy to attack regularly and create chances.

The first fell to Ian Hammett as Baker found him with a long throw. Hammet cut into the box, but fired his shot straight at the keeper when eiether side and it would of been a goal. Hammett then had another chance as Staf flicked the ball on, but this time he headed straight at the keeper with the ball slightly behind him. Staf was having a particular off day in front of goal as he found several shooting opportunities from 20 yards that he would normally have threatened with sailing high wide and handsome. He was however involved in Sandy's goal as he won the ball off the centre back. The ball broke to Hammett on the edge of the box, who took one touch and then fired it past the Caldecote keeper.

Long shots from Mark Jennings, Phil Beall and Rob Tapley again failed to trouble the Caldecote keeper and Sandy's crossing left a little to be desired as several good opportunities to get the ball in the box were not taken and came to nothing.

Sandy replaced Luke Morgan with Charlie Seward to add to their attacking threat with JJ moving to right back and Seward made an immediate impact getting on the ball and spraying it about. However he couldn't quite provide the killer pass that would unlock the Caldecote defence for the second goal.

Caldecote were still threatening on the counter attack and Matt Hall was required to make a couple of saves. Mark Jennings also cleared one off the line that had beaten the Sandy keeper. However with the clock ticking down and the visitors pushing forwards for goals Caldecote scored a fifth and completed the rout against a dejected Sandy side.

It was a disappointing result for Sandy who had been looking to bounce back from a midweek defeat that ended their unbeaten run in the league. Manager Ian Hammett will be hoping for a much imporved performance against FC Meppershall next week when they return to Bedford road for the last home game of the season. Final score 1-5.
