Match Report

Sandy took their pre season form into the start of the season with an excellent win against Campton Reserves. Following James Day's decision to join Ickwell and Old Warden and Steve Monks request for a transfer the day hadn't started too brighlty for manager Dan Bailey, but this performance should well have put a smile back on his face.

Sandy dominated the match and the scoreline flattered the visitors somewhat as the home side failed to take several good chances, which would have ensured that they would of had a much more comfortable afternoon.

Sandy started well as the team pressed as a unit and denied Campton time and space. Sandy could have opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Dean Hains floated a cross to the back post, but Ian Hammett's header sailed over the bar. Shortly after Dean Hains had  shot that flew across the Campton goal, and Mark Jennings had an effort from the edge of the box that went wide after Ian Hammett had pulled the ball back to him.

Sandy continued to dominate possession with their defensive quartet continuing their formidable pre season form by snuffing out almost every Campton attack. Phil Cooper standing in for the departing James Day had little to do other than take goal kicks for most of the first half, due to the great team effort.

Finally 35 minutes into the half Sandy's pressure paid off and they took the lead. A long throw from Craig Baker was poorly headed away by the Campton back line, the clearing header fell nicely to Chris Cooper on the edge of the box whose volley through a crowd of players left the keeper rooted to the spot as the ball nestled in the net. Half time 1 - 0

Following the break Sandy felt that a second goal early would kill the game off and how they weren't 2 - 0 up five minutes in is anybodies guess. Dan Bailey challenged the keeper as a through ball was lofted high, the ball broke loose and Ian Hammett reacted first to latch onto the ball but he inexplicably scuffed his effort from 6 yards with the goal at his mercy. Instead of celebrating Hammett held his head in his hands trying to understand what had happened.

That miss was to be punished shortly after as Campton found an equaliser out of nowhere. A long cross field ball fell to their number 11 who held off three Sandy defenders to shoot powerfully past Phil Cooper, who to his credit did get a hand to the ball.

Sandy managed to lift themselves though and 20 minutes in to the half they restored their lead as Ian Hammett made up for his earlier miss. Mark Jennings played a good through ball to Dean Hains who had cut in from the left flank. Hains first touch fell into the path of Ian Hammett who coolly slotted the ball into the empty net which had been vacated by the Campton Keeper who had advanced to cut out the angle for Hains.

This signalled more pressure from Sandy who looked to add to their lead. Andrew Wren had an effort ruled out for offside after good work from Mark Jennings, Dean Hains had a shot tipped over the bar after his original cross had rebounded back to him off Ian Hammett, and Daniel Bailey had a curling effort headed off the line. Craig Baker and Chris Cooper also had speculative efforts that failed to trouble the Campton Keeper.

For the last ten minutes Sandy'd rearguard came under greater scrutiny as Campton pushed forwards looking to equalise. They had a header ruled out for offside and late on had another headed opportunity that sailed over. Dean Hains did have a chance to make the three points safe five minutes from time, but his low shot was straight at the keeper after a good ball from Brad Dennis.

It didn't matter though as Sandy stood firm to take all three points from their first league game of the season.
