Match Report

Sandy suffered a controversial defeat at Horseshoe Close in this 1st round match against local rivals and Premier league side Dunton.

Taking confidence from their excellent pre season form, including their weekend win in the Jess Piggott Memorial Trophy, Sandy started well and matched Dunton for long periods during the game. They restricted their premier league neighbours to few chances and some would say created the best opportunities themselves.

This was to be a match that was decided, as so many local derbies are by two key moments. The first coming mid way through the first half, when Sam James broke down the left flank, as he ran into the box he felt he was fouled as he was muscled off the ball. The referee waved play on, but in a fleeting moment his frustration showed through and James kicked out at the defender. This did not go unnoticed and the ref immediately stopped the game and produced his red card, reducing Sandy to 10 men for the remainder of the game.

Prior to that moment, Sandy had given a good account of themselves, battling for every ball and with man of the match Andrew Wren keeping the dangerous Nicky Threadgold quiet Dunton failed to provide much of an attacking threat. Chris Cooper had a half chance to trouble the Dunton Keepet but his shot sailed wide after he robbed a defenedr of the ball, and Dean Hains couldn't quite find Sam James who was open at the back post with his deep cross. Following the sending off Sandy worked hard to close down and managed to go in at the break 0-0.

10 minutes into the second half came the second key moment. A through ball found Nicky Threadgold in the inside left channel and the Sandy backline appealed for offside. The linesman had his flag up without hesitation, the referee appeared to signal a stop in play but didn't blow his whistle. Nicky Threadgold continued through on goal unchallenged and rounded James Day who had stopped playing thinking the offside had been given, and then tapped the ball into the empty net. Sandy it seemed had committed the cardinal sin of not playing to the whistle, following a chat with the linesman and Sandy captain Richard Seldon the referee indicated that he had played on as he felt the player was onside and had just acknowledged the linesman's flag rather than stop play.

Sandy felt that everything was against them, but almost equalised shortly after when Chris Cooper hit the post after good work from Dan Threadgold. Craig Baker also had a long range effort that went close as Sandy searched for an equaliser and threw men forward. It was to no avail though as the the final whistle blew before Sandy could make the break through.

Manager Daniel Bailey was understandably disappointed by the result, but felt that the performance boded well for the season as his team more than matched a consistant premier league side.
