Match Report

Sandy beat local rivals Dunton to progress to the Final of the Jess Piggott Trophy after a hard fought game. Strong winds at Bedford Road meant that it was difficult for both teams to play football, but each tried their best to avoid using a long ball game.

Sandy found it hard to cope with the wind and struggled to string passes of any quality together. Andrew Wren and Phil Beall were under constant bombardment as Dunton tried to use the wind to their advantage to play balls in behind the Sandy backline. James Day in the Sandy goal had to make a couple of saves low down to his right following speculative long shots but other than that was untroubled for most of the half.

Sandy struggled to create chances early on, Dan Threadgold had one long range effort that was easily saved by the Dunton keeper. Sam James did have one moment of magic in the first half as he went on a mazy run past four Dunton players, once in the box he cut the ball back, but it was just to far in front of Ian Hammett for him to get a touch. Hammetts lunge at the ball did appear to put off Mark Jennings who with the goal at his mercy failed to control the cross.

Five minutes before half time Sandy should have led. Dean Hains muscled Dunton's centre back off the ball before pulling the ball back to Ian Hammett who from six yards out shot straight at the keeper when he should have scored. Half time 0 - 0.

After the break Sandy stepped up a gear and within 15 minutes they were 2-0 up. Their first goal came after a driving forward run by Daniel Bailey, allowed him to slot the ball down the inside left channel for Ian Hammett, Hammett then pulled the ball back to the edge of the box where Sam James flicked the ball up and shot past the Dunton keeper.

Shortly after a good ball from Phil Beall out of defence found Sam James in space on the halfway line. Ian Hammett and Dan Threadgold both made runs to create space and James floated a lovely ball into the path of Threadgold who held off his defender to shoot past the keeper.

Sandy then made substitutions, as Dunton attempted to try and get back into the game. Dan Threadgold and Leon Bryan both had good opportunities to add to Sandy's lead late on, but both chances went begging. It didn't matter though as Sandy held onto their lead to progress through to the final.
