Match Report

Sandy continued their excellent start to the season with an emphatic victory against a Meppershall side who were promoted from division 2 last season. After a point on opening day Meppershall were brought back down to earth by a rampant Sandy side who notched a 7-0 victory with little trouble and they could have reached double figures.

Sandy started well and were ahead after 10 minutes, as Chris Cooper latched onto a long ball over the top from Andrew Wren and slotted the ball past the Meppershall keeper who didn't seem to know whether to advance or retreat back to his line. Sandy then made it 2 - 0 shortly after when a flowing move by Daniel Bailey and Dean Hains down the Sandy right ended with a neat one-two allowing Bailey to advance into the box and dispatched the ball between the keeper and the near post.

This second goal seemed to spark Meppershall into some life as they attempted to gain a foothold in the game. Sandy defended well but had Meppershall's final ball been a little better in the slippery conditions they may have caused more problems. For the following ten minutes Sandy's football seemed to stall as they gave the ball away, but they made it 3-0 35 minutes in when Mark Jennings played a diagonal ball in behind the Meppershall defence which Dan Threadgold latched onto, he then rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the empty net.

Sandy had further chances to add to their lead, but a good double save from the Meppershall keeper denied Sam James, he then saved a Chris Cooper effort well from point blank range. Cooper then also had a shot that drifted just wide, and Dean Hains fired wide from a tight angle. Half time 3 - 0.

The second half proved to be one way traffic as was the first, and after five minutes Dean Hains made it four with a cool finish after Daniel Bailey had put him through with a defence splitting pass. Dan Threadgold then had a long range effort that drifted just wide and Chris Cooper delivered a wicked cross into the box only for it to flash across the face of the goal.

With twenty five minutes to go Meppershall contributed to their own downfall when they took a quick free kick on the edge of their own box, Ian Hammett slide in to knock the ball back to Craig Baker, who calmly passed the ball into Sam James who dispatched the ball clinically past the Meppershall keeper.

Mark Pallister in his first game for Sandy between the sticks was called into action shortly after, as Meppershall had their first effort of any note. Pallister was down quickly though to parry away the skidding long range shot away to safety. Once again Sandy's defence was excellent throughout the game as they restricted Meppershall to limited amounts of possession which ensured that Pallister had a very quiet evening.

Two late goals added to Meppershalls misery. Ian Hammett broke down the right after a ball from Dean Hains, he advanced on goal and then unselfishly laid the ball across the box to Brad Smith who on his debut slotted the ball home from six yards. More quick thinking from Hammett moments later contributed to Sandy's 7th goal as he won a corner and then took it quickly, passing to Sam James who collected the ball and dribbled into the box before slotting the ball home through a crowded area.

Manager Daniel Bailey was ecstatic with the result as Sandy moved to the top of the table on goal difference. Final Score 7 - 0.
