Match Report

On another turbulent afternoon at Bedford Road, Sandy produced a much improved performance but still failed to come away from the game with anything to show for  it.

Once again the wind battered Sandy's home pitch ensuring that conditions would be less than comfortable for both sides. Although on a poor run of form Sandy felt confident that they could give the league leaders a tough game and Flitwick were lucky to come away from the tie with all three points.

The game was very much an attritional affair with both defences on top, and goalscoring opportunities were few and far between. In a game were the referee was prepared to try and let the game flow each team hurried, hassled and harried each other into losing possession on numerous occassions. Flitwick used the wind to their advantage in the first half as they managed to pen Sandy in their own half for long periods. Sandy's defence looked assured and confident throughout though and nullified all of Flitwicks forward play with a commited effort. Some nice touches from the Sandy midfield failed to open up the Flitwick backline and Ian Hammett and Charlie Seward spent much of the time leading the defensive effort from the front.

Chris Baines did manage on cross shot effort midway through the first half, but this was the only time that Sandy managed to test the Flitwick keeper. Mark Pallister in the Sandy goal was as much of a spectator as well as Andrew Wren and Phil Beall at the heart of the defence were rock solid. Half time 0 - 0

The second half proved to be much of the same, and it was always going to take a special goal or a little bit of luck to break the deadlock. It was Flitwick Town who had the luck this afternoon as with 25 minutes to go, play broke down in the middle of the pitch as Sandy tried to break. The ball found it's way into the Sandy box, Andrew Wren threw himself in front of the striker, but he scuffed his shot badly into the ground... this allowed the ball to break to his strike partner to tap the ball home past a stranded Wren and Pallister. If the first Flitwick shot had been hit true, then it would have been cleared by Wren easily.

This goal aside the league leaders failed to create anything for the whole game as Sandy worked hard as a team. Sandy did have some chances of their own in the second half, but these were reduced to speculative long shots and a couple of free kicks from Chris Baines.

Sandy were left frustrated in a game that they felt they deserved something from, but it was a much improved performance after their loss to Stevington last week. Final Score 0 - 1
