Match Report

Sandy were once again made to endure a frustrating afternoon as they allowed Henlow to take all three points in this local derby.

On a glorious day at Bedford road, Sandy felt that they had a real chance to consolidate their league position against a Henlow side that had lost their last two on the bounce. Depsite this motivation once again Sandy started sluggishly as they failed to use the wide open spaces of the bedford road pitch to their advantage.

Seeming to resort immediately to a long ball game, Sandy were constantly under pressure for the opening exchanges as the Henlow back line dealt comfortably with all the aerial balls. Despite this pressure Sandy's backline was standing firm with Phil Beall having a good game at the heart of the defence. Henlow though did take the lead on twenty minutes, they had a corner from the left flank that was punched clear by Mark Pallister only for it to fall to a Henlow player, whose cross was turned in by the unmarked central defender at the far post

Sandy then seemed to come to life, as they have done in games previously this season. Mark Jennings almost scored after he recieved the ball on the just outside the box from Ian Hammett. He cut inside, but his shot was saved. Brad Smith then shot over after a through ball from Craig Baker. Sandy were rewarded for finally playing football after thirty minutes when Ian Hammett latched onto a Mark Jennings through ball, his first touch took him past the defender and then he rounded the keeper to finish from a tight angle.

Despite further pressure Sandy failed to make clear cut chances as their final ball let them down. Half time 1 - 1

Sandy came out firing in the second half and had Henlow under pressure from the off, winning a succession of corners but once again they failed to create clear goalscoring opportunities. Twenty minutes in some flowing football created an opening for Brad Smith. Richard Seldon carried the ball forward from right back and passed the ball into Ian Hammetts feet, Chris Baines made an excellent forward run and Hammetts deft flick on found him in space. Baines then slotted the ball into Smiths path, but Smith just failed to connect with the ball as it run away from him into the keepers hands. Henlow immediatly punished Sandy and some miscommunication in the Sandy backline afforded their forward time and space to slot the ball home past Pallister.

Hammett almost equalised immediately as straight from the kick off play broke to Brad Smith who slotted the ball through the inside left channel. Hammett faked a shot and then cut inside the centre back, but his curling left foot effort was well saved by the Henlow keeper.

Sandy pressed forwards as they desperatley searched for an equaliser. Andrew Wren sent an effort wide from a Dean Hains corner and Mark Jennings had a header that sailed wide from a Phil Beall cross. It was to no avail though as once again Sandy failed to find the answers and couldn't quite conjure up an equaliser to take a share of the spoils.
