Match Report

Sandy suffered their first defeat of the league season at the hands of a strong Marston Social side. Sandy never really got going all afternoon and their performance mirrored that of the dreary weather that had set in.

Sandy came into the game full of confidence after their excellent pre season form, but it was the physical Marston Social side that imposed themselves on the game early on. Sandy were harried and hustled off the ball and seemed to resort to the long ball game, which the robust Marston defenders enjoyed as they headed everything away with little trouble as both Ian Hammett and Chris Cooper struggled to match their size and strength.

Andrew Wren and Phil Beall were also being given a torrid time by the tall Marston centre forward who seemed to be flicking everything on to his strike partner. After a couple of early wayward shots at goal Marston took the lead after 15 minutes when a speculative long range effort caught keeper Mark Pallister by surprise, and he failed to hold onto the shot which crept inside the near post. The goal seemd to spark some life into the Sandy side, who battled hard to get the ball down and play their football. Surprisingly Sandy's biggest threat seemed to some from set pieces and they almost equalised on 30 minutes when Phil Beall floated a long ball into the box which was headed down by Chris Cooper into the danger area. Liam Hogan anticipated the flick and his toe poked effort was diverted wide by the feet of the Marston Keeper.

Craig Baker then launched a long throw into the Marston box which was flicked on by Mark Jennings and then Ian Hammett, but the keeper reached the ball just before Dean Hains who thought he was in. Marston were still pushing forward also, and Mark Pallister made up for his earlier error when he did well to tip a long range effort round the post.

Just before the break Sandy pulled level as Mark Jennnings floated a free kick perfectly into the box. Ian Hammett's diagonal run lost his marker as he gambled between the defence and the goalkeeper, reaching the ball first to guide it past the stranded Marston keeper. Half time 1 - 1

Sandy started the second half with far more vigor and won a succession of corners as they pushed forward. However their final ball let them down at times as Marston managed to snuff out the threat. Sandy's defence were however also coping much better with the Marston forward line as they also failed to work Mark Pallister in the Sandy goal. 10 minutes into the half and in the abscence of any Marston substitutes their right winger had to go in goal as he was suffering with a knee injury. He was almost immediately called into action as a free kick on halfway from Phil Beall was overhit, but almost dipped underneath the crossbar only for the new keeper to judge it correctly and tip it over.

Ian Hammett then came close to giving Sandy the lead when he latched onto a defensive error by Marston. He started theh move on halfway, by getting the ball in behind the full back for Dean Hains to run onto. Hains then delivered the ball into the box that both defenders missed, unfortunately it was slightly behind Hammett whose left foot shot on the turn went over the bar. With fifteen minutes to go it should have been 2 - 1 as Sansy had the best chance of the half. Some good play through the centre by Craig Baker and Mark Jennings engineered an opening for Dean Hains who found himself on on one with the keeper, he chose to shoot instead of squaring to an open Ian Hammett at the far post, but his left footed shot was straight at the keeper who saved.

Sandy were punished five minutes from time after soaking up Marston pressure. They conceeded a corner and Sandy gifted them a free header from which their centre back made no mistake. Marston's second goal finally seemed to galvanise Sandy into some football as they flooded forwards to try and equalise. Andrew Wren had a chance 3 minutes from time as the ball broke to him in the box, but he shot wide. Sam James also had a snap shot that went wide, but it was to little to late as Sandy fell to their first league defeat of the season. Final Score 2 - 1 to Marston
