Match Report

On a difficult afternoon at Bedford Road, Sandy maintained their unbeaten league run by recovering from a one nil deficit to share the spoils against a strong Marston Social side.

Sandy went into the game with high hopes of recording their fifth league win in a row, but they struggled to recreate their form of the last few weeks in the first half, as they found themselves one nil down at half time.

It may well have been a different story if Sandy had taken their early chance after 10 minutes. Sam James’s corner from the left looked to be curling out of play at the front post, only for Ian Hammett to react quickly and keep the ball in play flicking it into the danger area. Phil Beall got to the pull back first, but he couldn’t quite stretch his ‘go-go gadget’ leg out far enough and could only poke it tamely into the grateful goalkeeper’s hands.

Although Marston were playing the better football of the first half, chances were few and far between for both sides. Richard Seldon was marshalling the back four well, and they were coping well with the pressure that was being applied by the visitors. Mark Pallister in the Sandy goal had once again been reduced to a mere spectator by the robust defence in front of him.

However on 30 minutes one mistake gifted Marston the lead. A long ball was Sandy’s undoing as Andrew Wren failed to step up with the rest of his defence. This created a one on one situation for the Marston forward against Wren, which he used to full advantage. Just as Wren went for the sliding tackle, the forward nicked it past him and waited for the contact, penalty to Marston. They dispatched the penalty past Pallister, sending him the wrong way.

This was the only shot that Marston mustered for the whole first half, and due to a much needed improvement from Sandy they were to only have two more during the entire rest of the game.

After a half time rollicking from the management Sandy came out in the second half full of purpose and were immediately on the front foot as they began to string passes together. For much of the second period Sandy were camped in Marston’s half, winning a succession of corners and creating some excellent attacking opportunities.

This play however failed to produce any real clear cut chances, as the ball seemed to always fall kindly for the defending team allowing them to clear their lines. Chris Baines was beginning to pull the strings in the middle of the park and Steve Jakes was having an increasing amount of joy down the right flank. It was play down this right flank that finally brought Sandy their goal as Andrew Wren hit a diagonal ball in behind the left back which found Captain Richard Seldon on a marauding run from right back.

This was the first time that Sandy got in behind the defence and they didn’t waste it, as Seldon cut the ball back to the far post to Mark Jennings who volleyed home from 12 yards.

Sandy looked the most likely side to win the game, but they failed to trouble the Martson keeper any further during the game. Sam James had a couple of long range efforts that deflected wide, but the closest they came to scoring was from a Marston Defender. Ian Hammett and Steve Jakes played a lovely one two down the right flank and Jakes crossed to Hammett in the box, but the defender managed to slide in, only to see his clearance go perilously close to the goal.

Marston were the happier of the two sides to hear the final whistle as it finally gave their defence some much needed respite, but Sandy were a little disappointed to have not made their second half pressure tell more fittingly. Final score 1 – 1.
