Match Report

With a makeshift side Sandy once again produced a first half performance to be proud of as they continued their preparations for the upcoming season. Missing no less than ten regular defenders from the Sandy Football Club squad, manager Ian Hammett had to shuffle the pack to even field a side. Mark Jennings slotted in at centre back alongside man of the match Phil Beall and Ian Hammett had to play at left back for the afternoon.

Despite the changes Sandy enjoyed a splendid first half performance that saw them level at 1-1 at the break.

Southill took an early lead when Mark Jennings was adjudged to have brought down their forward in the box, and Jason Lynch converted the penalty for the visitors. Although suffering this early setback the home side didn't drop their heads and slowly began to edge their way into the game. On 15 minutes they were forced into another reshuffle as Mark Jennings took an elbow to the nose, causing it to bleed heavily. Debutant Chris Jennnings (no relation) slotted into the back four and Brad Smith moved into centre midfield.

If anything the injury galvanised Sandy and on 30 minutes they were level through an excellent solo effort from Charlie Seward. reminiscant of Luis Fabiano's goal at the world cup, Seward juggled the ball in the box, flumoxing the defenders and then calmly volleying the ball home left footed into the corner. This was no less than the home side had deserved as they had competed ablely with their premier league opposition throughout the game. Southill did hit the bar with a long range effort during that first half, but this was their only other chance of note as Sandy enjoyed good spells of pressure and if the ball had broken their way then they could of taken the lead.

The second half saw Southill put Sandy under more pressure, but the home side looked untroubled for the most part. However a lapse in concentration from a long throw allowed Southill to cut through the Sandy back line, and Bobby Saunders scored with a deft chip over Mark Pallister. Pallister was then called into action shortly after as he made a splendid double save to deny Southill a furher goal and then captain Richard Seldon cleared a shot off the line.

Charlie Seward and Brad Smith had long range efforts that sailed wide for the home side, and Brad Dennis almost had a tap in as the ball rebounded off the Southill keeper, but he recovered quickly to nick the ball off Dennis toes and away to safety. At times Sandy looked just as comfortable in possession as their visitors as Brad Smith and Craig Baker worked tirelessly in midfield to cause the Southill players some issues. Mark Jennings returned at half time to add steel to the midfield.

Southill scored with a free kick halfway through the seond half, and keeper Mark Pallister will probably feel that he could of kept the ball out, as he did get a hand to the curling shot. They added a fourth with the last kick of the game to earn a scoreline that somewhat flattered the visitors, however once again manager Ian Hammett was pleased with the performance despite the disappointing result.
