Match Report

Sandy finally managed to break their losing streak tonight with a superb performance in this local derby. Following their improved performance on Saturday vs Dunton, they went into the game with confidence and it showed.

The game started scrappily as each team struggled to settle, with Caldecote exerting some pressure on the Sandy defence which held strong.

Mid way through the first half Sandy took the lead, as Ian Hammett broke free of the Caldecote back line to latch onto a through ball from Dan Bailey. Bearing down on the Caldecote goal Ian forced a good save from the Caldecote goalie, only for Dean Hains to anticpate well and follow up to lob the ball up and over the keeper into the net. This seemed to galvanise Sandy into a period of sustained pressure, Dan Bailey had a shot from 20 yards deflected wide, and Ian Hammett had a near post shot kept out by the keeper as Sandy looked to improve their lead.

With 10 minutes to go until half time they did just that, as Steve Jakes played the ball into Ian Hammett who flicked a lovely through ball between Caldecote's Left and Centre backs for Craig Morse to run onto and take all the time in the world to slot home past a stranded goalkeeper. Sandy almost made it three by half time when Brad Dennis latched onto a loose ball in the Caldecote area following a corner only to shoot over from close range.

The second half saw Caldecote come out strong, but robust defending from Andrew Wren and Phil Beall ensured they were kept at bay. Ian Hammett put the game beyond Caldecote mid way through the half as he latched onto a Shane Pope through ball to guide it first time past the on rushing Caldecote goalkeeper.

Caldecote did score a consolation goal, but it proved too little to late, as Sandy clinched a morale boosting win.
