Match Report

The reserves suffered a massive setback in trying to survive in Division 3, by losing to an ordinary Caldecote side who were made to look good in the second half.

The feeling prior to the game had been much improved following their run of two wins, and Graham Ward had a length talk with the squad before the game trying to get confidence and belief in the side to win this local derby. The team was announced with minor changes, Steve Jakes slotted into the middle of midfield, with the remainder of the team very similar to previous outings.

Anthony Roberts (linesman) didn't appear which resulted in Ward having to run the line, which caused some communication problems and not being able to motivate the side properly.

Sandy Reserves played well in the first half with 60% possession but very few goal chances were made. The team played comfortably and prevented Caldecote gaining any rhythm and made them frustrated. In the 35th minute some carelessness allowed a free kick to be given away on the edge of the Sandy penalty area (left side). Marcus Tait found himself booked for the challenge by referee Keith Redman. The free kick was taken, but Dean Hains gave away another straight away and the 22 yard free kick was struck into the top right hand corner of the goal. Phil Cooper was rooted to the spot and Sandy found themselves behind against the run of play. There was immediately a sense that the players dropped their heads.

It had been expressed at the start of the game for Sandy to avoid playing long balls at the Caldecote back line as their 6 foot tall back four would soak it up easily. The instruction had been to play the ball into feet and allow the forwards to penetrate the 18 yard area and create come chances. Unfortunately this didn't happen, and even though possession was 60% in favour of Sandy the midfield was very static and some impetus was clearly needed.

Ward and Lloyd decided to make some changes at half time to try and get back into the game. The disappointed Marcus Tait was taken off and replaced by Kevin Fage. This allowed Dean Hains to sit back into the middle of midfield with Steve Jakes. Fage slotted into left midfield.

Sandy then allowed Caldecote to take advantage of the first half goal and showed little resilience, letting them take over the second half. Mat Baines came on in the 60th minute for Dan Hoole to try and sure things up after Sandy slipped to 3 - 0 down.

The team didn't bond at all during the second half and allowed Caldecote to score 4 easy goals. Frustration started to set in with Brad Smith being booked for dissent. To cap off a poor afternoon for the home side Dean Hains got himself sent off for stamping on an opposing player after a free kick was awarded. Then to finish off a bad day, substitute Matt Flynn decided to walk off and get changed with 20 minutes to go because of being dropped. It has now been announced that he no longer wants to play for the club.

There was no Motm or can of coke awarded.
