Match Report

Graham Ward struggled to get a regular squad for this outing against Clifton Reserves FC. This was also hampered by the non availability of an official referee. The game was refereed by Paul Greaves (Clifton Reserves management).

Three Players were called up to the senior side due to First Team players also not being available. GW was without Adam Jones, Brad Smith and Adam Hales which made a total of 13 players being unavailable.

However, this gave opportunities for several new players to shine and put their mark on the squad. New faces included Alex Bailey, Dave “Monkey” Harris, and Jay Pateman. The 4-3-2-1 formation was favoured again by GW, who also played himself in the right back position. Clifton Reserves started the game brightly and showed some good football that will make them good contenders for Division 4. The Sandy defence muscled and shut down the Clifton forward line with much credit causing frustration for the away side. Clifton eventually broke away in the 15th minute down the right wing and crossed the ball onto the unmarked centre forward who headed into an empty net.

GW (sat in defence) was struggling for fitness and keeping up with the young agile left winger. 20 minutes into the game GW swapped with Matt Gedney to enable younger legs to challenge the forward. The defence started to look more confident with Dan Grinstead pulling the strings and blocking out several attacks. Adam Jakes looked much more comfortable and complimented the defence with several last minute challenges. Alex Bailey started the game very well, but suddenly had to go off half way through the first half, with a groin strain. GW had to make changes, with the injured Marcus Tait coming on in replacement. Marcus settled in well, and started to knock the ball about to enable Dave Harris and Jay Pateman to attack the goal.

Sandy FC fell behind again, with some industrious work created from a young side making it 2-0. The Sandy side responded immediately with the energetic Dave “Monkey” Harris hitting a fabulous shot from 30 yards into the top left corner of the net. The side suddenly come to life and started to play some good football forcing a corner. The corner was taken from Dan Hooley, who found Marcus Tait on the edge of the area, who headed the ball into the back of the net 2-2.

Sandy FC Reserves played some good football in places, but the visitors look stronger on the break resulting in a final score of 2-4. GW was happier than the previous week, with the effort and attitude of the players.

Man of the Match was shared by Dave “Monkey” Harris and Adam Jakes.
