Match Report

Sandy ran an in form Dunton side all the way in this local derby, and were disappointed to come away from the game with nothing to show for their efforts.

Sandy playing a 4-5-1 formation tried to hurry Dunton's influential midfield in an attempt to reduce the service to Dunton's potent forward line. For most of the game this was the case with Shane Pope (man of the match) in his new dual role of captain and centre midfielder closing down and snuffing out most of Dunton's play. This allowed Matt Baines and Joe Stevens the chance to keep the prolific Dunton forwards quiet.

This being the case mid way through the first half, Dunton took the lead after one of their forwards managed to lob the advancing Matt Cauldridge. Sandy's response was excellent as an Ian Hammett through ball set Craig Morse away, but at the last minute the ball got away from the Sandy striker. 35 minutes into the game Sandy were level after some good work from Dean Hains on the right, he crossed for Craig Morse who timed his jump well at the back post to head in for the equaliser.

Dunton managed to regain the lead just before the half, but Sandy were positive that they could get back into the game.

Both teams struggled to establish themselves in the second half, Dan Bailey was unlucky with a speculative long range effort and Joe Stevens thought he had scored as he hit a sweet volley towards goal only for it to smack straight into the face on a Dunton player poleaxing him.

Sandy should have been all square 10 minutes from the end as a fantastic through ball by Shane Pope split the defence for Ian Hammett to slice his left foot shot wide of the near post and advancing goalkeeper. As the game was winding down Dunton managed to hit the post, but still held out for the win.

Manager Dan Bailey was disappointed to lose, but took heart from the much imporved performance of the team.
