Match Report

Sandy kicked off their preseason campaign on an evening more akin to the middle of November rather than August. The players and the few spectators were soaked through before kick off as torrential rain lashed down upon the Bedford road recreation ground.

Both teams started the game well in the poor conditions, and with first touches difficult each team was trying to play flowing football. Embankment had the better of the early exchanges, but despite long periods of possession they failed to create any clear cut chances. Sandy took the lead after 20 minutes when Leon Bryan shot powerfully home past the Embankment keeper after a swift counter attack. This goal seemed to settle Sandy and they pushed forward. Leon Bryan had a couple of long range efforts that went wide as he proved to be a handful for Andrew Wren at the heart of the Embankment defence.

Sandy made it 2-0 on thirty minutes when another counter attack saw Ben Walton Smith cross from the right flank for Brad Dennis to ghost in unmarked at the back post to head home.

Embankment had two good chances before half time to reduce the deficit, the first coming after good work from Ian Hammett in the box. He pulled the ball back across the edge of the six yard box and into the path of Will Phillips who somehow managed to miss the ball completely with the goal at his mercy. Five minutes later Will Phillips had the chance to make amends as he latched onto a flick on from Ian Hammett to then round the keeper only to see his shot cleared off the line by Jamie Bellingham. Half Time 2 – 0.

The second half started with Sandy pushing forward and both Ben Walton Smith and Leon Bryan came close to adding to the lead. Sandy saw their lead reduced after 60 minutes when Josh St Pierre broke free on the left to coolly slot home past Phil Cooper in the Sandy Goal. Shortly after scoring his first St Pierre equalised when his initial shot was saved by Phil Cooper he tapped home the rebound with his right foot (something of a collector’s item).

Sandy then tried to get back into the game and almost took the lead once again when Dean Hill crossed to the back post to find an unmarked Anthony Roberts who headed wide from 5 yards. Adam Hales then had a tame effort saved on the line by the Embankment keeper who recovered well after spilling the original shot from Steve Monks.

Embankment made the break through with 15 minutes left when Daniel Carter finished off a good cross from Dean Hains, and with 10 minutes to go Embankment made it four when Will Phillips finally got on the score sheet with a scrappy finish between two defenders after Josh St Pierre had pulled the ball back across goal from a Dean Hains cross.

Sandy dominated possession for the last 10 minutes as they tried to get in the game, but they failed to create any clear cut chances. Assistant manager Dave Lloyd was disappointed with the loss, but felt that there were many positives to take from the game including the excellent first half performance. Final Score 2 - 4
