Match Report

Graham Ward had a full squad for this outing against Goldington Hammers Reserves FC. There were still 5 players unavailable due to holidays, work and not turning up. However, this gave opportunities for the new players to shine again and put their mark on the Team.

The 4-3-2-1 formation was favoured again by GW, with Brad Smith sitting in the centre of midfield. There was expectation that Goldington Hammers were a good side after beating Clifton Reserves 6-1 the previous weekend. Sandy FC Reserves started the game brightly with 5 in midfield. The Sandy defence and midfield muscled and shut down the Goldington Hammers side to prevent any chances being created.

This allowed Brad Smith and Adam Jones to dictate and within 25 minutes Sandy were 2 goals up. The first goal came in the 15th minute when a through ball enabled Jay Pateman to slot the ball into the back of the net. The second goal was similar, where the ball was worked down the left flank and pulled across for Jay Pateman to slot in his second goal. Several other chances were created but the score stayed the same until the second half.

Jay Pateman pulled a calf muscle which prevented him continuing the game. Matt Flynn came on in the 35th minute to play left midfield. Brad Dennis slotted into the centre forward position. The first half was a great boost for the team’s confidence. Expectations were high with the Manager. The second half started well in the first 5 minutes with opportunities being created. Then suddenly, Sandy switched off for 25 minutes which enable the home side to pressurise the defence.

Mistakes started to occur across the whole of the side – giving the ball away and a lack of concentration which eventually got two players booked through frustration and retaliation (Matt Gedney and Dan Grinstead). Eventually, Sandy picked them selves up and created a few chances which Dave “Monkey” Harris scored a third goal.

The pressure was off. GW made 2 further substitutions bringing on Dean Hill and Marcus Tait. A lack of concentration enabled Goldington Hammers to score a consolation goal out of nothing. The defence tried to unsuccessfully play the off side trap allowing the forward to score a simple goal. Within 5 minutes, Sandy broke away with the Goldington defence getting into a muddle and Dave “Monkey” Harris capitalised and scored his second goal.

There was no MoM nominated – but each player was brought a pint of lager for their efforts.
