Match Report

After a tough start to the season for Reserve Team Manager Tony Gregory he was finally able to call on a full strength side as Ryan Gregory returned from 1st Team duty and the Reserves were bolstered by Olly Banfield and Darren Gipson from the 1st Team squad. Banfield was sent to work on Fitness after missing three weeks due to watching the egg chasing in NZ and Gipson was asked to get 90 minutes under his belt after strong performance for the 1st team last week.

With this strong line up Sandy went to work with a positive attitude, with only one thing on their minds, To win their first game. The game couldn't of started better either as Ryan now back from loan to the first team, found his goalscoring form, as his shot from way out side the area flew past the keeper who could only just get his hand to the ball, this gave Sandy a 1-0 lead.

After conceeding several goals the defensive line was strong with Olly and Pete in the centre, Gipson on the left and Sheppard on the right, meanig that shots at our newly signed keeper Phil were kept to the minimum. Phil Cooper returned to the club from the 2010/11 season and has quickly regained the number one jersey for the reserves. This was justified when trust in the keeper was found very early as he came out to collect the ball, with strong instructions to his back line and safe hands when the shots did come his way.

Gipson and Sheppard were making good use of the wings feeding Stratton and Dennis as Sandy pushed on the attack. Hales slotted a long ball through to Chris from the half way line, leaving Chris one on one with the keeper. With a confident move Chris slotted it past the keeper for Sandy's 2nd.

With the heat of the sun Sandy's determination kept them strong and keen to keep the pressure on, as they looked to increase the score with more attempts on goal. The pressure told and Sandy were awarded with a corner, a superb ball in from Johnny found Stratton's head for a excellent finish, Sandy now 3 up as the half time whistle blew.

A very positive chat about the outstanding performance and efforts from the squad in the first half, it made sense to restart with the same players. With 15 min's in the 1st sub was made, Baines came on for a straight swap for Hales (captain), Baines took the armband for the remainder of the game.

Ickwell upped their game as they came at us with all guns blazing, Sandy kept the hosts at bay though as the strength and fitness of the side paid off.

Sandy again looked to establish themselves in the contest and Johnny made a strong run out towards the corner flag and placing the ball in toward goal, Ickwells keeper came across to meet the ball away from his goal mouth only clearing the ball out towards Chris. Chris's quick thinking and left foot just missing the open goal finding the side netting, luckily Sandy were 3-0 up.

With more attacks and shots on goal either skied or cleared by the keeper, Sandy made the second sub, with Chris making way for Dennis to move up and Garth taking the left flank. The early pushing efforts of Johnny and Dennis were now being flagged by the Lino as they regularly failed to time their runs. However a perfectly timed run by Dennis earned Sandy the 4th goal as Dennis took the ball in from the side of the box beating the keeper.

The 3rd and final change to the field was a straight exchange for Sheppard as Flynn took control of the right back. Danny Hooles positive attitude about being the 4th sub of the day showed his commitment to the squad.

Player of the match was awarded to Pete Rogan for his continued efforts over the last three games and an outstanding performance during this 1st win for Sandy Reserves.

Appreciation was given to Olly and Gipson for the effort and attitude toward the Reserves.
