Match Report

Sandy Reserves were looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat to Thurleigh with a home tie against a side that they had beaten convincingly a few weeks ago. The day however started poorly, as two of the selected players from the 1st Team squad who were helping out Luke Morgan and Matt Gedney were both called into work at late notice. This left Sandy a bit short but Manager Tony Gregory managed to field a hastily reshuffled team.

Tony was then forced to make another final change to the squad just before kick off, as his left back was running late again due to work commitments.

Sandy however had a strong but young and inexperienced side to start the match, but on recent form they were still confident of getting a positive result from the game. The visiting side however had other ideas and Kempston Athletic attacked hard from the off, looking to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture. They managed to regularly find their way through Sandy's left side.

The home side were stuggling to deal with some very poor decisions from the ref which really rattled some of the younger players. One such bad decision was when leading scorer Johnny Stratford was pulled down in the Kempston box, for what looked like a stonewall penalty but the ref waved play on not awarding the spot kick. Both Chris Gregory and Brad Dennis were yellow carded as they challenged the ref about the decision a little too strongly.

Sandy did also pick up a third yellow card which was awarded to Matt Baines for a sliding challenge, which seemed reasonable.

For the most part the home sides football was better than Kempston's but they managed to break through on regular occassions often against the run of play as their forwards continually latched onto long balls.

Manager Tony Gregory was particularly impressed with his son Chris Gregory who appeared to have a change of heart as the second half kicked off, he became alert and passionate and more focused on the game without worring about the refs decisions no matter what. Tony felt that it had been some time since he had seen Chris with this much passion for the battle as he worked his socks off.

Overall the Second half was better and again during the half the better football from either side was played by Sandy. Matt Baines continued his strong goalscoring form by slamming in two fantastic goals into the Kempston net, the first one was assisted by Brad Dennis and the second by Johnny Stratford. However the visitors held on to gain the three points.

Player of the match was awarded to Chris Gregory as his efforts on the pitch were very much noticed not only by Manager Tony Gregory but by the players as well.
