Match Report

An excellent performance from Sandy gave them all three points from a fixture that after 20 minutes appeared to have all but got away from them.

Sandy started strongly and settled into their football, after five minutes Ian Hammett pressured a Kempston centre back into a mistake and robbed him of the ball. He broke clear of the defence but took his time, allowing the Kempston defender to recover, unfortunately the defender then brought Hammett down in the box. Ian Hammett scored from the resulting spot kick placing the ball low to the keepers left. Kempston replied almost immediately when two minutes later a long kick from their goalkeeper eluded the Sandy back line for the prolific Gary Whitbread to run onto and score.

It was 2-1 shortly after when Shane Pope upended Gary Whitbread in the box, who then scored from the resulting penalty. On twenty minutes it was 3 -1 and Sandy looked out of it, when Gary Whitbread latched onto another through ball and slotted calmly past stand in goalkeeper Phil Cooper for his hattrick.

The third goal finally seemed to galvanise Sandy as they came back to life with some good flowing football. Liam Evans floated in a fantastic ball that beat the Kempston defence, Ian Hammett controlled it wonderfully first time and then calmly slotted it past the stranded keeper. Sandy were now beginning to pile on the presuure and James Smith broke free of the Kempston back line to have his shot well saved by the Kempston goalkeeper, Ian Hammett tried to follow up and just beat the defender to the ball only to see his shot hit the post. Dean Hains then equalised on 35 minutes when a fantastic cross field ball from Chris Winton found him cutting in from the right to finish with his now trademark near post finish.

With three minutes left in the half, a Dean Hains cross deflected off a defender and fell kindly to James 'Niko' Smith who shot through a crowd of players, with the help of a deflection the ball trickled past the keeper. 4-3 at half time.

Sandy came out strong in the second half, full of confidence after their first half come back. The defence were now holding strong with Matt Baines and Shane Pope keeping Gary Whitbread relatively quiet following his first half hat trick. Sandy made it 5 - 3 ten minutes in when a quick throw in by Dean Hains bamboozled the Kempston defence allowing Chris Winton all the time and space he needed to shoot calmly from 25 yards out. The keeper appeared to leave the ball as it then hit the far post and went in. Kempston then tried there best to get back into the game, and Gary Whitbread headed over from 8 yards from one of their corners.

For the next 15 minutes sandy poured forward and should have scored more. Playing flowing football they created numerous chances. Daniel Bailey trying his luck from range several times couldn't trouble the Kempston keeper, and Brad Dennis also went close on a couple of occasions as Sandy adopted a shoot on sight policy. It was only going to be a matter of time before they scored again.

With twenty minutes to go Sandy found that elusive sixth goal, when a long ball from Matt Baines caused confusion in the Kempston defence, the ball broke kindly for Ian Hammett to control and slot the ball home past the Kempston keeper for his first hattrick of the season.

With five minutes to go it was seven when good work from Anthony Roberts and Ian Hammett, allowed Ian to lay the ball back to the waiting Chris Winton who scored his second of the afternoon from 25 yards with a great lob. In the final couple of minutes Phil Cooper was called into action to make a great close range save from Gary Whitbread to deny him his fourth of the afternoon. Final score Sandy A 7 Kempston Ath 3.
