Match Report

Sandy Reserves started their pre season campaign with a disappointing result, but with a very positive performance. Manager Graham Ward would find it hard to be critical of his teams efforts during their first friendly as they did everything but manage to hang on for a hard earned win.

As with most pre season games the early exchanges were disjointed at best as both teams struggled to find some tempo and stability to their play. Sandy however looked well organised from the off and some good defending backed up by some excellent goalkeeping from Phil Cooper ensured that the scores stayed level.

It was Sandy who took the lead after 25 minutes when Matt Flynn's long range effort hit the bar and fell kindly to Brad Smith who tapped the ball home. This was no less than they deserved as although they hadn't had large amounts of possession, they had played some nice football and threatened to make things happen. Some heroic defending from Adam Jones before half time ensured they maintained their lead as he somehow blocked a Sharnbrook shot off the line.

Sharnbrook came out of the traps strongly in the second half and it was only some splendid goalkeeping from Phil Cooper that kept Sandy in the game. He made a string of remarkable stops and looked destined to keep a well deserved clean sheet as Sandy looked to hold their lead. The home side did look dangerous on the counter attack, but failed to create any further chances to get the second goal that would have killed the game off.

Sandy held out until 75 minutes when the vistors finally managed to beat keeper Cooper with a 25 yard effort which flew into the corner. This goal gave Sharnbrook confidence and they soon took the lead with an excellent move and finish. Sand tried to respond, but they were caught on the counter attack late on to concede a third which flattered the visitors. For 75 minutes the home side had looked like they would get their pre season off to a flyer and manager Graham Ward will be keen for his team to remain positive and think of all the good work that they achieved during the game.
