Match Report

Sandy Reserves hosted Shefford and Campton A at Bedford Road with both sides looking to really kick start their seasons. Manager Tony Gregory again made changes to his side as he looked for the right balance to get a good result. Peter Rogan who had signed in the week made his first start at the back, with John Sheppard being named Captain in the absence of Adam Hales.

The home side started a bit slow as the visitors attacked the home goal with intensity. The back line defended solidly but as they pushed an early attack out of the box, the ball fell to the feet of the opposition, who fired the ball into the top corner, giving keeper Matt Balls no chance to even see the ball, let alone stop it from going in. This left Sandy on the back foot as they tried to find a way back into the contest after this early setback.

Campton's attacks stayed strong and the home side were focred to play the ball long to clear the threat away from goal. There were continuous efforts from the back line to clear the play forward up the wings, and kick start the home sides attacks toward the oppositions goal. Sandy did have some joy in the first half as they won a penalty. Chris Gregory took a head swipe from the keeper, leading scorer Johnny Stratford converted the penalty for Sandy's first goal.

Tony made a change to the midfield in the first half, which saw a big change to the attacking play with Hoole now in the centre and new to the field Reece Stratton on the right wing. Sandy started to threaten the strength of the opposition, the half time whistle blew and the lads gathered, refreshed with oranges, water and a serious chat, helped change the mood of the players.

Tony decided to make more changes at half time bringing Matt Flynn into the back line and Garf as left back pushing Matt Bains into centre midfield. These changes seemed to make a big impression to the second half as the home side found a new lease of life and they were attacking hard pressurising Shefford's midfield and back line forcing them to begin to make errors and create opportunities for themselves.

Some fantastic play down the right wing from Danny Hoole found Reece Stratton in a position to pressurise the goal keeper but the ttack came to nothing. Campton were still attacking strongly though and Matt Balls kept them from finishing. Pete Rogan the new signing held strong as centre back and was clearing the ball regularly and tracking back even to the goal line covering our keeper at some stages giving an impressive performance on debut.

Sandy were still trying to find more goals and Danny Hoole created an opportunity to get their second as he fired a ball in-toward Chris who was position at the edge of the box, as the ball arrived Chris went airborne and finished the move with a volley, claiming his first goal for Sandy.  Danny Hoole then had his second assist as he sent Reece off down the wing who then cut inside for a well worked finish.

The final change to the side took place as Tony subbed Matt Baines for Harry Barham, with a slight shuffle Barham took role as the left back. Matt Balls made a great challenge on the forward striker, keeping him from adding to the score, but then Balls made the striker turn away from goal and took him out, resulting in a penalty and the showing of a yellow card. He was lucky because it could have been a lot worse.

Manager Tony Gregory felt that it was a fantastic turnaround in the second half, after losing the first half 5-1 but wining the second half 3-2. John Sheppard once again held the team together this time as captain, and man of the match was awarded to Stratton for his strength in changing the game. Final score 4-7
