Match Report

Sandy went into this county cup match knowing it would be a tough encounter due to the visitors, Shillington, playing their league football in the division above. However, Sandy will be full of confidence after they gave a very good account of themselves.

Shillington brought about the first good chance in the game when a cross found their winger in the box who would have definitely scored if it wasn’t for an excellent save from Sandy keeper Phil Cooper. After this early scare Sandy then imposed themselves onto the match and dominated for the next period of play.

Sandy’s Kevin Fage thought he had opened the day’s scoring only to find he had been flagged offside. However, that disappointment was short-lived as soon after Brad Dennis managed to flick the ball onto Steve Jakes in the box, who coolly controlled and slotted the ball past the keeper with his left foot. Fage then had a chance to put the home side 2-0 up only to see his shot inside the 6 yard box go wide.

Shillington capitalised on this miss and soon after scored as some poor marking allowed Shillington’s Sam Larsen to turn and volley past Cooper. Still against the run of play Shillington managed to further their lead when some poor marking allowed one of Shillington’s players to head the ball in from a corner.

However, Sandy continued to dominate the half and this paid off thanks to a long range effort from Charlie Seward. The keeper had advanced and managed to get a touch on the ball but it still found its way into the back of the net. Half-time 2-2.

The second half saw Sandy take their foot off the gas somewhat and Shillington took full advantage of this 15 minutes into the half. The ball somehow eluded a number of Sandy defenders as it was played in from the left and allowed Shillington’s striker to score his only shot on target throughout the game. Shillington then added a further 2 goals to their tally in the next 20 minutes when Cooper found himself lobbed twice by Sam Larsen who completed his hat-trick.

Although Sandy were 3 goals down they held their heads high and battled on to add to their own scoreline. This paid dividends when 5 minutes from time Adam Jones played a ball from deep past the opposition’s backline for Fage to run on and lob the advancing keeper.

Although Sandy were defeated the players and manager (Dave Lloyd) found many positive to take from a game that they should have won.
