Match Report

Sandy Reserves returned to winning ways with a strong perofmance to pick up a fantastic and well deserved result for club away at Stewartby Village and cement their place in mid table.

From the off Sandy controlled the match with some good quality passing and possession football. Jonnie Stratford took control of the team as captain as the normal captain Adam Hales was not available due to work commitments.

Sandy's youth and pace was leading to some early shots at the Stwartby goal, but the home sides goalie was managing to keep the visitors at bay and although the odd shot was off target he was regularly tested. It was only going to be a matter of time before the pressure told and Sandy took the lead when Ryan Burgess ran hard with the ball up the right wing. He started to tuck in toward the box, and struck the ball as if he was going for a well placed cross, however his attempt was rewarded as his cross went clean into the bottom far corner of the goal. 1-0 Sandy.

This early lead and reward for their early pressure settled the players, and they continued to push hard to take the game to opposition. Once again their dominance showed as Stratford headed the ball towards goal and breaking away from the back line. After beating the defence he had only the goalie to deal with, however on this rare occasion Jonnie missed the ball and lost his footing much to the keepers relief. This though was short lived as Jonnie recovered and he managed to retain the ball and he calmly laid the ball across the face of goal for Chris Gregory to convert for a second Sandy goal.

This rattled the opponents, and Stewartby hit us hard from the centre as they pushed toward our goal with the bit between their teeth. Sandy's back line showed strength and determination as they managed to control the play, winning the ball and pushing the play back up field toward midfield. The first half ended with Sandy holding a healthy 2-0 lead.

The visitors returned to start the second half, looking to continue in the same mode and build on their lead, the home side though had brought some new players onto the pitch, making a massive impact to their side. They began to get a foothold in the game and pin Sandy back. Sandy shifted tactics and  now had to man mark closely just to keep them away from their goal.

The impact that the changes had was certainly in Stewartbys favour as Sandy conceded 2 goals and were pegged back to 2-2. With the score now level Sandy needed to respond and lift their effort. The team needed to focus on the job ahead and work hard to get something from the game and they certainly responded to this.

Catching their hosts on the counter attack after defending one of their corners, Jonnie cleared the ball and found Ryan Gregory who then headed toward Stewartby's goal. Ryan Gregory was being chased by the defenders as he sprinted away to be one on one with the keeper, Gregory calmly slotted the ball across the face of the keeper into the bottom left side, making it 3-2 and scoring what proved to be the winning goal of the match.

Stewartby pushed again trying to find an equaliser and at one point they thought they had found it, when a flowing move ended in a goal. However they were denied a point by the linesman as the player was seen to be off-side. Sandy held on though to win and take all three points.

Man of the match was awarded to Jonnie for his support as captain and continued efforts not only thorough this game but passed games. Final Score 3-2.
