Match Report

On a tiny pitch with long grass, Sandy FC Reserves started the game brightly with 5 packed in midfield. The ball was difficult to contain and control due to the conditions. The Sandy defence and midfield muscled and shut down the Wooton Village side to prevent any chances being created at the early stages. Sandy Reserves looked quite comfortable  Brad Smith and Adam Hales tried to dictate the midfield and create chances.

The first goal came from a drop kick from Goal Keeper Phil Cooper into the last 1/3 of the pitch. The ball landed into the path of Brad Dennis who rounded the keeper and placed the ball into the back of the net. Great goal.

This gave Sandy some confidence. However, some sloppy defending down the left hand side gave Wooton Village a bit of an incentive and allowed them to take advantage. Wooton had a couple of chances that went wide. The standard of football was below par and Sandy got sucked into not taking advantage of a poor side.

A free kick on the edge of the box in the 30th minute was awarded to the home side. The kick was saved by Phil Cooper who parried the ball into the path of the alert centre forward who easily knocked the ball into the back of the net. Score 1-1. This seemed to brighten Wooton Village up and they started to create chances, which included a 15 yard strike that smashed off Sandy’s goal post. It was a warning that should of brought Sandy to life.

The second half started the same as the first. Both Matt Gedney and Dan Grinstead played well at the back. Both players sustained injuries (suspected broken finger and leg strain), but they stayed on pushing for a Sandy win. Both players stood out and claimed a share of man of the match. In the 68th minute, Wooton Village scored from a free kick which was disallowed.

Graham Ward couldn’t believe that the Home Team had scored out of nothing. Fortunately, the scored stayed the same. In the 75th minute, a through ball over the Wooton defence found ever present Matt Gedney who volleyed in a goal into the bottom left corner from 18 yards. Score 1-2.

The pressure was off and Sandy comfortably finished deserved winners.
