AFC Darwen

06 Mar 2016   10.30AM   North Valley & Burnley Unity League

Lytham St Annes YMCA Girls U-15s 1-1 AFC Darwen

These two teams played out an entertaining draw in an evenly contested game at a cold but sunny Seafield Road last Sunday. Both teams produced some attractive football from the start with the visitors creating most of the early chances. However, YMCA goalkeeper Olivia Neal, who was outstanding throughout, denied the opposition with several fine saves. It was YMCA though who eventually took the lead midway through the first half when an excellent corner from Yasmine Menezes found Ellie McNally on the penalty spot and she netted with a first time shot to put her team 1-0 ahead at half time. After the break YMCA tried to find the vital second goal but found the visitors’ goalkeeper in good form also. With 10 mins remaining though and with YMCA beginning to tire a Darwen breakaway resulted in them notching an equaliser. YMCA almost snatched the winner with 5 mins remaining when an excellent chip by Isabelle Kells saw the ball come back off the woodwork and cleared away but in the end a draw was probably a fair result on the day. Madison Lucas and Phoebe Davies were both notable in a fine overall YMCA team display.
