AFC Darwen 6-5 Lytham St Annes YMCA Girls U-16s

YMCA fought bravely with 8 players for half the game in this 9-a-side tie and were unlucky to come away with a narrow defeat in cold and windy conditions in Darwen last Sunday.  Going into the game with a bare 9 players they started the game brightly and had early pressure which led to them taking an early lead.  A fine ball from Phoebe Davies found Ellie McNally on the right and her cross was met by Annabelle Jackson who made no mistake in firing the ball home.  Three mins later though the home side were level and quickly hit another quickfire goal to make it 2-1.  However a minute later a shot from McNally was parried and Isabelle Kells was on hand to score to make it 2-2 going into the interval.   Bad luck struck YMCA though when goalkeeper Olivia Neal had to come off at half time due to illness and Yasmine Menezes took the gloves and performed heroically.  The home side with a player advantage took lead within three mins of the restart and another soon followed to make it 4-2.  A brave YMCA though never gave up and the impressive Jackson got YMCA back into the game with her second goal.  YMCA inevitably began to tire and Darwen scored a further two goals to make it 6-3.  However YMCA still didn't give up and another goal from captain McNally made it    6-4.  A shot from outside the box by the notable Honey Griffith then made it 6-5 with a minute remaining but YMCA were unable to find an equaliser. The girls could go home though with their head held up high having to play the second half with only 8 players in a very entertaining contest.  Madison Lucas, Georgia Norman were both notable in a very spirited YMCA team performance.
