Burnley Girls & Ladies 2-5 Lytham St Annes YMCA Girls U-16s

YMCA produced an outstanding display to claim victory from their trip to East Lancashire last Sunday, despite only having a bare 9 players available. They started the game slowly and were thankful for goalkeeper Olivia Neal, who was excellent throughout, in denying the home side on several occasions including a 10th min penalty save. YMCA then started to find some fluency and a long clearance from Neal found Annabelle Jackson who in turn found her strike partner Isabelle Kells and she slotted the ball home give them the lead. A second goal soon followed when after some neat approach play from Honey Griffith she found Kells who this time turned provider for Jackson to sweetly lift the ball over the goalkeeper's head and into the net. Kells and Jackson were causing havoc in the home defence with their skill and pace and Kells latched on to a Jackson pass to give YMCA a 3-0 lead at the break.  YMCA continued on the front foot after the restart and Kells found space behind the home defence to put them 4-0 ahead.  With 15 mins remaining YMCA were forced to play with a player short when captain Ellie McNally had to leave the field with an injury but very sportingly Burnley also removed a player to even the numbers up - a true sporting gesture that was appreciated by both sets of parents and coaches. 10 mins from time YMCA’s lead went to 5-0 thanks to an own goal but the game was far from finished. After Burnley missed from another spot kick they eventually managed to score past goalkeeper Neal and added a second late in the game. In an excellent YMCA team display the rearguard of Megan Lewis, Saisha Bracken and Madison Lucas were outstanding as were McNally, Georgia Norman and Griffith in midfield and with no substitutes it was testament to the team for their tireless efforts against good opposition.
