WEEKEND 9/ 10 MAY 2015

On the Sunday of this weekend three YMCA teams played in cup finals. In the Hogan Cup Finals at Bloomfield Rd our Under 16s took on FC Rangers Blues and previous results between these two teams suggested that this was always going to be a close game and so it proved. Blues took the lead and a headed goal by Mattie Rhodes brought us back level only for Blues to score again to take a 2-1 lead into the break. 10 mins after the restart Blues went further ahead with a spectacular 30yd strike. Our boys didn't drop their head though and a Carnan Dawson goal brought us right back into the game. We applied constant pressure in the latter stages to try and find an equaliser but it wasn't to be and Blues held on for a narrow 3-2 victory.

Also at Bloomfield Rd our 15s were against new league champions Foxhall. They had beaten 4-0 at Seafield only a couple of weeks ago so we were very much 2nd favourites to lift the trophy. However, our boys produced a very gutsy and battling performance and we gave as much as we got throughout the game to earn a very creditable and much deserved 0-0 draw. A penalty shootout had to decide the outcome and YMCA keeper Spenser Barker was a hero by pulling off three great saves as we won the shootout 3-1 and collect the cup, the 3rd time this YMCA has collected a Hogan Cup.

Over at Townley in Burnley our Under 11s Girls also overcame the odds to claim a terrific 5-0 win over Academy Juniors in the North Valley & Burnley Unity League's Cup final with Ellie Etheridge bagging four of our goal in a clinical display of finishing. Ellie McNally was our other scorer and this impressive victory capped a superb first season of competitive football for our girls.
