Match Report

Pre season started soberingly for Sandy 1st team after a summer of turmoil with a poor result away to lower league opposition. Clifton showed that they had played a couple of pre season games already as they looked sharper than Sandy in every department and the visitors struggled to establish any superiority in the game.

With two players making their first team debuts and the bench filled with reserves, Sandy were keen to use this pre season friendly to build fitness and give players a good run out. Despite the disappointing result Sandy started the game quite well, and looked relatively untroubled for the opening twenty minutes. They even created some half chances to open the scoring with John Joe Pekszyc having two long range efforts on target, and Craig Baker heading wide from a Dean Hains corner.

It was to be some sluggish defending that cost Sandy, as the Clitfton forward was allowed to turn in the box and shoot. Keeper Mark Pallister saved well, but a clifton player reacted first to the knockdown and tapped the ball home. Minutes later they made it two as Sandy failed to clear a corner allowing the forward to stab home. Corners were to prove Sandy's downfall later on the half as Clfiton took a short corner, worked their way into the box and then made it 3 - 0 with a stunning near post drive. It was 4 - 0 just before half time as Clifton scored from another corner with an unchallenged header at the back post.

Sandy made changes at half time and these made some impact as finally they began to play some football and create chances. Charlie Seward lobbed the ball over the keeper and over the bar when clean through, Craig Baker shot straight at the keeper, as did Ian Hammett after being set through by Dean Hains. Despite slipping to 5 - 0 against the run of play, sandy finally sprung to life as substitute Brad Dennis cut inside off the left flank and played a lovely pass into Seward, who took the ball down well, turned the defender and balsted the ball home. Sandy then pulled another one back through Phil Beall as he connected with a near post corner from Dean Hains to steer the ball home.

Adam Jones was playing well at the back as he and Liam Evans slotted in well to the back four at half time, but despite their best efforts Sandy slipped further behind to another great goal from the clifton striker and then Debutant Dave Fish brought down another player in the box, who got up and dusted himself off to make it 7 -2. It was a tough result for the visitors who played well for fits and starts during the game, but again let their heads go down after conceeding and never seemed to recover.

It was a very disappointing result, but new manager Ian Hammett felt that he had learnt some valuable lessons about his team, and has identified the areas that the team need to strengthen in. He indicated that he would be meeting with the chairman to discuss his transfer targets and hoped that there would be funds available.
