Match Report

It was to be an evening of frustration for Sandy as once again they lost by the narrowest of margins to the team who top the league.

Having to make several enforced changes due to five regular first team players being unavailable, Sandy knew it would be a tough task against Flitwick, but the team started the game well.

The game however was almost identical to the match played earlier in the season as both defences were on top for long periods and neither goalkeeper was unduly troubled during the first half. The best moment of the half came from Alex Baker who latched onto a cross field ball from Dave Smith and then ghosted past two defenders, but he agonisingly saw his chip over the onrushing keeper hit the bar and get cleared to safety.

Despite playing some good football Sandy’s final ball let them down as they seemed to struggle with the ridiculously small pitch that the match was being played on. The back four seemed to be back to it’s usual robust self though and Flitwick’s forwards were given very little to thrive on. Half time 0 – 0.

The second half proved to again be a war of attrition with few chances for both sides.

Flitwick almost took the lead ten minutes into the half when a deflected shot hit the post and rebounded into the grateful arms of Mark Pallister. Pallister was then called into action shortly after as he made a smart save when one on one with the Flitwick forward.

Sandy had a couple of half chances, but once again the ball just didn’t seem to be falling for away side and the game looked destined to head for a 0-0 draw. However much like earlier in the season it was to be a defensive error that cost the away side. Flitwick had a corner that Sandy failed to clear despite numerous chances and the ball broke to a player on the edge of the box, whose powerful shot flew into the bottom corner through a crowd of players.

Sandy battled hard, but couldn’t create any opportunities to test the Flitwick keeper and get something from the game and they were to leave empty handed. Full time 1 – 0.
