Match Report

Sandy arrived at Sandy knowing they would get a decent game as usual from Henlow. Barry Morris returned to his managerial post on the bench as Sandy still had a few players missing, and it was nice to see Nathan on the sidelines for the game despite serving his 1 match ban. The weather was surprisingly good considering the weather over the last couple of the days and everyone was looking forward to getting started.

Hoping to get back to winning ways Sandy were taking control of the game and the majority of the pitch as they probed the Henlow midfield and defence to try and create some openings for the strikers to get back off the mark, after failing to score for the first time under Barry last week. Sandy tried getting it wide and it was down the left that they were having the most joy, Shane played the ball to Ryan/Liam and Shane received the ball again after bursting into the box, he shuffled his feet with the ball to get round the first 2 defenders, but as the Henlow defence swarmed around him he wasn't able to get a shot out from his feet and the ball was cleared. Henlow were not leaving too many gaps along their backline and Johnny and Liam were working hard to find space and to beat the offside trap. Balls were received out wide and over the top but the Linesman was very trigger happy and it was going to take a very well timed run from the strikers if they were going to avoid being "offiside". Eventually though Johnny did get through and found himself one on one, the goalkeeper was very quick off his line though and Johnny wasn't quite able to score from this opportunity. Henlow were still dangerous on occasion as Sandy sometimes lost the ball cheaply or were hit on the counter. Though Sandy defended these well and Henlow so far hadn't had a decent enough chance to trouble Pally in goal. Johnny, Gregory and Burgess were starting to pick the ball up wide with the Tom-Tom combination in midfield working well, and this led to a succession of corners and free kicks. McGhee popped a free kick out to the far left of goal, and Johnny was there to work the ball inside the 6 yard box and he squared for Liam to score to finally open the scoring, 1-0. Occasionally Henlow were getting some space on the counter and were always cutting inside towards the centre of the pitch and Sandy held firm to deny any one on onees. They did finally get a chance though as a goalkick caught out Sandys high defensive line and this went straight down the centre but a good save from Pally kept Sandy in the lead. Sandy really needed to get a second goal to try and take away Henlows determined attitude but they just couldn't quite get the goal they deserved, and with 5 minutes before half time Henlow equalised. The ball fell out wide for the Henlow right winger and as the ball bounced he tried to cross the ball to the centre forwards but he sliced the ball and so the ball instead was heading for goal, Pally shouted for it, Beally actually listened to him, and as Pally and Keith(the Henlow skipper) went for the ball they both completely missed it and the ball spun into the net. Pally was rightly ashamed. Half time 1-1.

Henlow switched their right winger for the second half as he was carrying a knock, whilst Sandy stayed the same, mainly because they didn't have anyone else. Again it was Sandy who were the dominant side and they had pockets of good spells where they were passing the ball around nicely and trying to create more openings. The longer the game went on though the less likely it looked like Sandy would break through. The linesmen for both teams were playing a very big role in this game and there were arguments from both sides everytime an offside decision was made. One in which the referee actually over-ruled Colin in play, thus allowing the Henlow forward to continue, but because he was also moaning despite being played on, it allowed the Sandy defence to pressurise the striker and he wasn't able to get an accurate shot off and so shotwide. If he didn't moan maybe he would have put Henlow in front. The key moment came in the game with about 15 minutes to go, Sandy won a corner on the left. Tom Burton stepped up and curled the ball towards the far side of the goal and from about 10 yards out Beally outjumped his marker and powered a header right into the top corner to finally give Sandy the lead again, and Sandy could breathe a sigh of relief, particularly Beally and Pally for obvious reasons. Sandy withstood any further Henlow attacks with a last ditch block here and some neat covering there. Sandy had 2 more failed opportunities to score, one where Ryan should have scored after the ball was squared to him from the right, however he just put a little bit too much power on it and it went over the bar. Johnny had the goalkeeper scrambling on the floor at one point, but the defenders had gotten onto the line and by the time Johnny had wrestled the ball away from the keeper and it was blocked on the line. Sandy though did get the final nail in the coffin as they had another corner, again taken by Burton, the Henlow goalkeeper misjudged it and instead it glided off Beallys head and towards Tommy McGhee at the far far far post. Tom took a touch and powered an audacious shot towards the top corner and the keeper had no chance as it pushed him into the top corner with the ball. 3-1.

Sandy had recovered from last weeks disappointment and were back to winning ways, as a bonus the other teams around them dropped points so they were able to move back into 2nd place. They will be hoping to continue on another unbeaten run in order to catch up with Goldington at the top of the table. Next week Sandy have another crunch game at home against Luton Seniors.
