2008/09 Season Awards

Following a tough season, Sandy managed to avoid relegation after winning 6 of their last 7 games which saw them finish 12th in Division 1.

Players Player - Darren Wheatley

After a consistent season between the posts, Sandy's shot stopper was recognised by his fellow teammates to have had one of his best seasons for the club. For a majority of the season Darren was a busy man, as Sandy struggled to get results, but he managed to keep them in many of those matches with a string of fine saves.

Managers Player - Andrew Wren

Andrew Wren made the step up to the reserve side from the A team and he fitted in straight from the off. His tenacious defending and wonderful aerial presence made him a regular in the Sandy back line, and the partnership he formed with Phil Beall at the heart of the Sandy defence ensured that opposition strikers always had to work hard. In his 20 appearances he also managed 2 goals.

Young Player of the year - Alex Baker

Alex joined Sandy this season after playing for Sandy Colts. He had a short stint in the A team before moving up into the reserve side. Alex didn't look out of his depth playing at this standard and manager Richard Wheatley felt that he made an outstanding contribution in helping the team avoid relegation.

Top Goalscorer - Chris Cooper

Although goals were hard to come by this season for the reserves, Chris Cooper managed 8 in his 16 appearances. His season was filed with hard work and few opportunities, but those he did have he took well.

End of Season Cheer for Sandy Reserves

Fantastic end of season form means that Sandy Football Club will have representation in Division 1 of the Bedfordshire County League for the 2009/10 season.

Following a turbulent year for the club relegation looked a foregone conclusion until a fantastic run of six wins from their last seven games saw them avoid the drop. Checkout their section of the website for stats on all those games and to check out who were the heroes of Sandy.

If Sandy can carry this end of season form into next season there is no reason that they can't challenge for promotion back to the top teir of Bedfordshire football.

Fastest Goal of the season

Kevin Fage returned to Sandy's line up against Kempston on Saturday 28th March 2009 and scored the quickest goal of the season so far, taking just 38 seconds to cap a wonderful team move.

Kevin finished off the move that started straight from kick off and saw Sandy retain possession and create the chance without Kempston even touching the ball. It was a move that brought back memories of the great Dutch side in the 1970's.
