Match Report

It was an exciting afternoon for Sandy Reserves as they managed to save the day and come away with a draw and another point from a tricky contest. Sandy's performance in the first half left much to be desired, and there seem's to be a pattern forming as this was much the same from the previous weeks game.

The first goal that Sandy conceeded was from a scuffle within the box which the visiting side just didn't deal with allowing the hosts to take an early advantage in the contest. This was a result of some good play by Dinamo as they managed to out maneouver Sandy and push the ball forward down the right side.

The hosts second goal was gained as the Dinamo striker got away from Flynn when he fell to the floor as his knee gave way. The rest of the Sandy back line didn't seem to be covering the play, and the striker coolly converted his attempt. Sandy were now 2-0 down, and their woes were added to further as 30 minutes in manager Tony Gregory was forced to make the first sub, with Flynn coming off and John Sheppard slotting in to take control of the left back position.

Sandy were coming under increasing pressure and the home side piled forwards. This forced the visitors to play deeper. It was looking like being one of those afternoons for Sandy as after another 5 minutes played Phil Cooper took a hammering to his right leg as the Dinamo striker collided into him challenging for the ball. This left Cooper struggling for the remainder of the first half and as Half time arrived Tony was forced to make a massive decision Cooper could not continue.

The team was asked if anyone would take the keeper position, after a short pause and the question repeated, John Sheppard offered his services in goal. The second sub was made and Gipson slotted into the left back position which was now the reserves third left back of the game.

Despite the first half injuries and finding themselves two goals behind Sandy returned to the field, with a positive battling attitude and soon started creating chances. These chances soon led to a goal as a decent ball in from Brad Dennis was converted by Stratford for Sandy's first goal. This really seemed to launch Sandy back into the contest.

John Sheppard now playing in goal controlled his area as if he was, and always had been a keeper, his vocal support was helping the team as he would as a right back. This defensive knowledge stood him in good stead as he stood his ground between the sticks. Dinamo Flitwick started to push hard against their visitors in an attempt to keep the lead, but on a counter attack Leading scorer Stratford turned provider as he forced the ball across the box of players finding Hales at the back post, Hales headed the ball home for the equalizer.

The game was now very much alive with both teams looking for the winning goal, Sandy's midfield was tested as Dinamo's number 5 kept pushing his way through, keeping Sandy's number 9 off the ball, the ref didn't feel that any of these challenges could be awarded with free kicks, even if our number 9 was on the floor from the challenge.  Adding spice to the contest there was now bit of verbal banter was no apparent in the game as neither team wanted to give any quarter.

The last sub was now called for as Hoole replaced Hales, fresh legs on the right side gave Sandy some much needed impetus and gave them back the pace to continue the striking power. Neither side could make the breakthrough though and the game was pulled to the end as a 2-2 draw. Man of the match was awarded to Sheppard for his support to the team, as he took up the keeper position. Thanks John.
