Match Report

Sandy Reserves had a major set back in their fight for survival within Division 3. This was not down to a lack of effort, style or imagination but just bad luck in this Wednesday night fixture. The result left the home Team rooted at the bottom of the Division.

Graham Ward was without Dave Lloyd due to holiday commitments but had a wide choice of players to choose from. The 4-4-2 formation included Charlie Seward from the first Team to support and play in front of Marcus Tait. The Team formation looked very strong on paper and proved to play attractive football throughout as the evening wore on.

Sandy Reserves were encouraged by GW at the beginning to enjoy the game by creating chances down both flanks and supply the ball to the forwards feet. The game started and Sandy Reserves made Renhold look very average with some exceptional football played which made the Manager and crowd very satisfied.

All of the players across the park played some fine attacking football which didn’t allow Renhold to settle. The away Team looked worried and started arguing amongst themselves and the referee.

Throughout the first half everybody looked confident and composed on the ball with MotM Charlie Seward and Marcus Tait interlinking well. Unbelievably, Renhold scored in the 30th minute with an own goal by Captain Matt Gedney. “Gedders” was trying to prevent a left sided cross reaching a Renhold forward in the 18 yard area. Unfortunately, the player intercepted the through ball and bounced past the stranded Phil Cooper in goal.

Sandy FC drove forward and kept their “heads” up with confidence. Numerous chances were made within the Renhold penalty box with Dean Hains coming close and Steve Jakes blasting over the cross-bar from close range. As the first 45 minutes came to an end, Sandy was so much the better side and should have been 4-1 up. Sadly, the elusive goal didn’t materialise.

The half time Team talk made many positive discussion points and gave extra confidence to go and win the game. No changes were made at half-time as the Team were playing so well.

Charlie Seward, Leon Bryan and Marcus Tait continued to chastise the Renhold Team by spreading the ball across the park. This caused Renhold to make many mistakes. Eventually, in the 55th minute Steve Jakes was pulled down in the penalty area. Penalty awarded by the referee to the annoyance of the Renhold Team and touchline associates. Charlie Seward stepped up to take the penalty and struck the ball to the right hand side of the goal. The keeper parried the ball away. The rebound fell to Steve Jakes who again blasted over the cross-bar. Unbelievable.

Sandy continued to press forward with fantastic work at the back of the defence preventing Renhold to create many chances. However, legs started to fade in the last 20 minutes due to much effort and work rate in midfield. Out of nothing, a lack of concentration allowed the Renhold left wing to gain possession and allow the away Team to score through their centre forward.

Graham Ward and the Team couldn’t believe it – 2-0 down with so much possession. Marcus Tait was replaced by Brad Dennis who slotted into the position. 10 minutes later Dan Hoole replaced Dean Hains who appeared to have slight cramp.

Sandy pushed forward again to try and score a consolation goal which encouraged Renhold to break away and score in the 80th minute. 3-0 score line.

Sandy FC couldn’t understand how and why Renhold went home with the 3 points.

Man of the match was nominated to Charlie Seward for his work rate and skill contribution. The "Can of Coke" went to Steve Jakes for his unfortunate hat trick of missed opportunities.
