Match Report

Sandy's final game of the season ended in disappointment as Renhold managed to overturn a two goal lead to take all three points and secure 8th spot in the league.

Sandy were in top form going into the game, and had been playing some of their best football of the season during the run in, which had seen them win five of their last eight games. They started this game no differently against a physical Renhold side. Playing the same 4-5-1 formation that had brought them so much joy against Riseley saw them establish an early dominance in this fixture. Although early chances were few they took the lead after about 15 minutes when a lovely passing move was finished by Dean Hains for his 7th goal in as many games. The move started with a ball into Ian Hammett's feet just inside the Renhold half, he held the ball up and laid it into the path of Mark Jennings, who then played a nice cross field ball to Brad Dennis. Brad then slotted a lovely ball through for Dean to run on to and he calmly finished over the on rushing keeper.

Ten minutes later a similar move brought Sandy their second, as man of the match Brad Dennis chipped a pass over the Renhold back line which Dean Hains beat the defender too and again lobbed the advancing keeper. This second goal seemed to galvanise Renhold into action and on 30 minutes they drew level, when some good play down the left pulled the Sandy defence across allowing Renholds right winger to creep in unmarked at the back post to tap the ball into an empty net. Sandy almost made it 3-1 when from a throw in Ian Hammett controlled the ball in the Renhold box and laid the ball into the path of Dan Bailey whose chip shot deflected off the renhold centre back and almost looped over the keeperm, who had to tip the ball over for a corner.

Just before Half time Renhold's come back was complete when the Sandy midfield failed to close down a Renhold player whose rasping shot from 25 yards, sailed past a static Matt Couldridge and into the top corner. Half Time 2-2.

Sandy struggled to get started in the second half, as playing against the wind they couldn't seem to get out of their half. Matt Baines and Richard Seldon were working hard to limit Renholds chances and keep their forwards quiet, but Matt Couldridge was called on to make one great save. Sandy were also holding strong under the aerial bombardment of Renholds number 6 who had a Rory Delap style throw that he was using to good effect.

Sandy did manage a couple of long range efforts from Dan Bailey and Mark Jennings, but nothing that unduly worried the Renhold back line. Renhold scored the all important goal with 15 minutes to go, when good work down the right flank saw them cross the ball and their striker got in front of Matt Baines to force the ball home.

Sandy felt they should have had a penalty shortly after when Dean Hains appeared to be brought down by the Renhold centre back, but the ref awarded a goal kick to Renhold after waving play on.

Sandy were disappointed to have let three points slip from a winning position, but manager Daniel Bailey was happy with the end of season performances that saw them raise up the table to finish 9th, and improve upon last years points total by 8. He was confident that his young team will have a good season next year.
