Lytham St Annes YMCA Girls U-16s 5-3 AFC Darwen

YMCA maintained their undefeated league record with a hard fought victory at a sunny Seafield Road last Sunday morning.  The match saw the top two sides in the league go head to head so it was always going to be a tight contest.  YMCA took the lead in the 16th min when a throw in from Ellie McNally was flicked on by Isabelle Kells and Annabelle Jackson was on hand to strike home. However the visitors were always a handful and they equalised when YMCA were caught out on the break.  Things got worse for YMCA as they went 1-2 down soon afterwards after a corner  had caused havoc in the their defence.  YMCA were not to be outdone though and with minutes remaining of the first half Jackson produced some great play on the right before crossing  into the goalmouth and the ball found  Kells who finished smartly to make it 2-2 at the break.  Going into the second half with renewed vigour captain McNally led by example and it was her excellent left foot finish following a corner which put YMCA back in front at 3-2  The game was far from over though and the battling Darwen side broke forward again and scored to level the scores once more at 3-3. YMCA then had the chance to regain the lead from the penalty spot but Kells’ well struck shot was saved excellently by the visitors’ goalkeeper.  However, with some excellent play Kells was on hand just 3 mins later to find the net with a shot which was deflected past the keeper by a defender to make it 4-3.  With 8 mins remaining YMCA made the game safe after Kells again found space and with another neat finish she completed her hat trick to make the final score 5-3.  In a fine YMCA team display Honey Griffith and Georgia Norman were both outstanding throughout.
